This is probably a dump question but is there a host with built in compression/dynamics (option) on each channel strip ( NOT A PLUGIN !)? This question pertains to another one that I have about compressing multiple chanels.

Any help is greatly appreciated..

Why would you do that? Seems like a terrible waste of screen-space to me. I think compression is way over-done aroudn these parts. 99% of the compression I see in tracks I can look into does nothing but make the part louder.

SawStudio has it.

but BONES thinks it shouldn't have.

I don't think it is a particularly useful feature either but that was'nt the question, was it. :D

Ok so Saw Studio any others? I should probably add that It can be an optional feature on the channel strip that can be turned on/off..

well, Samplitude of course - it has dynamics, eq, and delay/reverb on each channel - but what Bones said is of course bollox as the gui is closed by default and the processing disabled/bypassed...

...and what he said about compression in general might be true (or might not be true - who cares what others do anyway?) but is completely OFF TOPIC and hence has to be considered TROLLING

Doesn't an SSL console have eq and compressor/dynamics on each channel? Frickin retarded.

Why can't it be a plugin? If it's because of efficiency, a host with a native compressor plugin would probably perform better than a VST plugin.

Depending on the host, you could just save a template with a low-CPU compressor on each channel. But I guess that wouldn't help when creating new channels...mind you, I agree with BONES: compressors are something you kinda pull out when you need it. But hey - so is EQ, for that matter; but I don't touch my host's EQ anymore; I prefer choosing from the well-made 3rd party stuff, mixing and matching, depending on whether I want colouring, drum bus/paralell compression, etc.

I wouldn't complain if Cubase came hardwired with an SSL-style channel on each track, though! :D

Thats not the issue.. I'm trying to figure out where most hosts put the internal dynamic effects (pre or post fader) compared to the external ones (vst/dx).. I knew if I asked this question straight forward I would get some round about answer so I decided to come at it round about 1st.. Ok you can begin sturring the vortex!

Ofcourse good quality 3rd party dyn fx are also great. I was just trying to figure out if 'most' hosts place internal ones before the fader or after..

Usually the inserts are pre-fader, because it most often makes more sense. In Cubase a couple of the inserts (maybe the last two?) are post fader iirc, and afaik you can choose where to jack in the built-in inserts, but I might be wrong about that.

I think certain older versions of qbase allowed you to choose between pre/post fader for all inserts.. ICBW also
