Looking for an eq that will not just bring down the selected frequency a couple of db's but totally kill the frequency. It can have a selectable slope but should ideally have a really step one!

some options:
- a fader

- a notch filter
- multiple parameteric EQ's with narrow bandwith in series

PLPar and Electri-Q both do the steep Q bell and notch really well. stack em up for overkill notching.

Bugpass should do it - it's got one of the steepest roll-offs I've seen.

not an equaliser plugging but it should be doing what you want.

BugPass 1.1 - is a a dual-function plug-in. Its primary job is to serve as a bandpass filter, with sliders which enable a quick visual reference to the size of the frequency band being passed through. However, by reversing the sliderpositions, BugPass will also serve as a notch filter, eliminating frequencies between the sliders while leaving the remaining frequencies intact.

dtBlkFX can also be used for fairly steep filtering.

if you want an EQ that totally kills your sound, use any digital EQ pre-2000.

FWIW, for it to completely kill som frequencies but leave others intact, the slope must be infinite decibels per octave.

But Electri-Q is indeed a nice option, maybe not to cut so drastically the fre (even if it can make a big slope), but it is so verstaile....

Not quite... If you use PLParEQ3, you can stack (for example) three 4-pole LP or HP filters in series, and get 3*24dB/oct, *2 for the forward/backward phase-linear processing method, so you get (if I'm correct) 144dB/oct, which is 24-bit digital silence in one octave. Just use quality=5 to minimize pre-ring and such...

ableton live has an eq where you can just push a button to kill the hi, mid or low.
-a good enough excuse to get ableton ?
