if you want an EQ that totally kills your sound, use any digital EQ pre-2000.

so whats changed since waves ren? AMLT, 64bit double, and?

maybe the fact not everybody sticks a bleeding biquad derivation everywhere anymore and calls it a parametric EQ.

indeed 64bit double has had a great impact, but then there are also small, yet significant innovations on parametrisation and phase vs. frequency bell shaping, transistor/tube models, oversampling etc.

...like hydratone, nyquist EQ, voxengo GEC, harmoniEQ etc, you get the idea. I'm sure you can appreciate how much better we have it today compared to pre-2000.

my question wasnt concerning the additional innovation and feature rich additions to a biquad core, but your comment 'digital eqs pre-2000 kill the sound', implying some kind of basic quality leap. but its ok ive got my answer.

I use really steep filters, like the 48db ones found in Fabfilter Volcano for this type of stuff.

I know you weren't being sarcastic but come on, waves renaissance! oldschool!

and my point was, even if somewhat obscured, that biquad isn't the de facto parametric EQ algorithm anymore. and thank god for that.

What I dont get is why no devs simply dont put an option to enter a value higher than 24 or 32 dbs (or what ever the default is)? Why not just give the user to option to enter what ever value they desire?? That would probably minimize the need for soo much stacking aka cpu bog..

FYI, Elevayta FreEq Boy is providing -90 dB to 90 dB, which can be scaled down with a slider. In the next release I can certainly make that user configurable. However, 90 dB ought to be enough attenuation already.

kn0ck0ut can do an ultra-hard cut of hi and/or lo frequencies. zero signal gets thru above or below the cut-off and 100% outside it. but it's frequency domain processing FFT/iFFT so not totally hi-fi quality. try it and see, it's free.
