Nope, steinberg has to use junky and buggy methods of encrypting their software, so you probably won't be able to try it out unless you use a friends or go blow your money on it.

I've never tried Cubase, probably never will. I hear too many bad things about dongles, and it's midi implementation.

The dongle is a nightmare, sure... but - what about its MIDI implementation is so bad? I've had some difficulties with the "emulated driver" problem, in the past - apart from that, I swear by it. I'm actually curious, I'm not "flaming" or whatever.

and let's not even mention the cheapo hosts which are missing such 'esoteric' midi requiremencts as aftertouch, well i'll be!

I think the store demo's you mention are instore demonstrations rather that installable versions of the software?

I'm happy with FL6 though, I really don't see why I would need another host at this time. I produce a lot of trance/dance music, but it works equally as well for rock, metal, and so on.

Well Cubase and FL6 are 2 different software for 2 different application !

I have to admit that those 2 software are working wonderfully together.......FL6 as slave

I've used a dongle for 4 years and I've had no problems! I've used the mapping for 4 years and had no problems. You have to be driven to program the Generic Remote. It's not going to do it itself! Don't let that be a sticking point. Cubase 4 is allright. It has it's shit like any other DAW, but what I will tell you is that it's a very good program. If you don't want to fork over the $1,000,000 that they are asking for the full version, just find somebody that that will part with SL or SX for a fair price. Then you can upgrade it for whatever the going price for the upgrade is, plus $50.00 for transfer and you're set. - Orbit-50

I love Cubase, but when I first got the upgrade to SX3 I was stumped that I couldn't get the midi working right (serious timing issues). After tearing my hair out a few nights, I posted to Cubase.net and got a response that indicated that the SX3 installer apparently puts some folder where it's not supposed to be. So I move the folder and the problem is solved.

Jump ahead a year or so, and I'm upgrading the PC for my DAW. I install the newest SX3 iteration (downloaded from the Steinberg website) and, you guessed it, the same midi timing issues. Fortunately I saved the old email and I was up and running in no time. But I was shocked that a major bug with a simple fix wouldn't get sorted out after several step upgrades.

The software works flawlessly for me now, but I'm dreading the install for the upgrade to Cubase 4 because of the potential for problems.

Whoever told you that any feature in Cubase sucks either faced one of these bugs, or just doesn't know how to use it. Cubase is still the standard that most of the other hosts measure themselves by. But to each his own...everyone needs to find the host that fits the way they work.

What folders where those if i may ask?
Ive tried solving my midi flutter problems for more than a year, and are forced to switch host just because its un-fixable. This is something i havent heard of/tried yet however, so feel free to enlighten me/us.

I'm having an issue in Cubase where I record MIDI to a click, and it sounds great going in, and is perfectly on click, but it gets recorded 1/8 or 1/16 beat later than it was played. There's no latency midi-wise, as it's playing it in correctly, and sounding back correctly, but it just "prints it" incorrectly. Is this the issue you were having? What is the solution?

If your talking to me Vertigo50, nopes. Thats not it. That kind of problem is fixed by using the correct midi port setting, emulated ports, timestamp etc.
My problem is that the playing midi doesnt stay in sync, it flutters around.
It only happens with my external synths however, not with VSTi's. Thing is, i mainly use external synths however..

That they are, but regardless, they are still demos of the product
