I find the more you go over -6db, the harsher a sound becomes when recording, until you get over the $2,000 soundcard price (very rough guesstimate).

With 24 bit and a good mic preamp there is never a beed to drive an a/d convertor that hard. But with 16bit only I would say print the vocal to your daw with no compression at all.... get as good clean a signal as you can going in.

Using a software compresser as an insert whilst recording will induce latency and throw your vocal performance of while you sing. Like it was said before, you can't uncompress the vocal once it ha been recorded through a compressor live. I would print it normally, then use a noise gate to get rid of hiss on quiet passages, roll off as much bass as you can get away with, then run your compresser of choice after the eq, then save up for a 24 bit soundcard.

The 24/96 maudio's whilst not boutique, are damn good workhorses for the money and can be had for peanuts on ebay.

Well, going to 24bit might enduce another problem. How much can your computer take? How big disks, and how much memory etc etc

So start of with a harsware preamp with some compressors/gates etc.

I bought a couple of Hootersound B1's(built by creator of Joemeek) which is a preamp with microphone input(XLR with 48V for condenser mikes) and high impedance instrument inputs as well. It has compressor, and gate also to be used as you like. The circuits inside are like the ones in medium/high quality mixers.

I would say you get one of these second hand for $60-$80 or so.

I can't find any Hootersound B1's nohow! Obviously the company is defunct, too.

I agree, he could experience latency problems that could not be undone later.
