Are there any midi sequencers or tools which may allow a part to say.... um. Maybe slow down a little bit and catch up with the other parts? Id like for this tool very much. Or perhaps speed up a little bit, then slow down to get back in sync. This relates to some experimentation I have done with midi envelopes in eXT. It will sweep from say... 180 bpm to 90 bpm. So you can do some interesting sequencing which tricks you that it is constantly zooming out of time. I think autechre do this in fold4, wrap5 (LP5). Its pretty awesome actually. Oh shit now Ill never become famous!

FL formula controller is quite ideal for this, ie. user defined formula modulating the tempo. They tell me it can create some seriously odd, yet still functional grooves even.

Can the tempo of one track run independently of the others? Im wondering if maybe I should figure out the math of using an envelope in eXT, rendering it, and then removing the envelope so the other parts run independently. Does anybody know where to start with this? Im assuming it is fairly simple but Im a little fuzzy with mathematics at times.

Also thanks a lot kingston you have been extremely helpful in my topics lately!

I don't know about EXT specifically but at least in Cubase and Logic (since very long a go already) you have separate tempo track on top of everything that handles time signature changes as well.

You can somewhat paint in the tempo on the track and get creative with it, and there are some smoothing etc tools, but AFAIK FL formula controller is the only one allowing algorithmic tempo modulation. Oh and I don't know wether FL has a tempo track or not.

well in eXT there is only one track for tempo. Thats the master. Each midi doesn't have its own.

EDIT: its got nice envelopes though.

Im actually now thinking that a vst effect could be used to slow down incoming midi according to like a modwheel. Anyone know of this. Then let it snap back, kind of like the wheel in retrodelay

no sequencer does.

and as for the midi track tempo slowdown effect, it should be doable with a simple midi delay plugin (that you would need to automate) in hosts that have it.

Bare with me.. This is how I do it with eXT as a slave plugin in FLS (You can do it with eXT alone also but haven't tryed it).. I start eXT as synced press record give myself some lead in in FLS playlist like 4 or 8 bars or so. Then I press play on FLS which start the proper recording sync point in eXT at the tempo from FLS's clock. Before the playlist gets to the MIDI (I only do this for MIDI), I turn OFF the sync in eXT (I hear theres a automatable button coming for this one in XT2). Then If I change the tempo in FLS (best to have it linked to the modulation control on your keyboard) eXT will record this as MIDI notes being played faster or slower.. You can now go back and play/record other parts on other MIDI or AUDIO tracks while retaining the off tempo track.

This might seem a tad confusing but it works for me. The good thing is that its easy to chop the start of the recorded MIDI parts in the sequencer in eXT because the recording was started in sync!

Hmm.. this sounds pretty awesome! but not what I need necessarily.

Lagrange, that's so freakin' cool.

I do this all the time in FL.
Hook tempo to the modismaster plug-in for fractal automation.

SOmetimes it may be easiest to paint tempo changes in the event editor or just hook it to the automation clips.

Nice thread, I look forward to more.
I've been writing tempo-fluctuating music for many years and look forward to being able to score it the way I hear it in my head, especially as I imagine it after ingesting lots of psilocybin.

Whoa nice idea about the feedback ! Having the tempo contolled by cc data that is tempo dependent. Must give some nuts results if done right. Does senderella send midi?

I just got reaktor!!!!! I think one of my first projects is a midi slowdown device, which can bounce back in sync! This might be pretty tough though.

wait is it possible to do pure midi effects in reaktor?
