I do like to layer synth 1 and envelope some of its controls as a makeshift matrix

Why would you want that, though? I mean, in eXT for example you can doubleclick a sequencer's MIDI clips to edit them. Same in FL; it will simply call up the piano roll.

Making alternative or unique MIDI edits is a matter of clicking "make unique"; you can chop, slip, and reorganize the clips right there. Why would you want to be able to do more than that within the playlist?

And yes, it's 6.4 beta (soon to be 6.5 later this month :D ), you can see FL's moving towards more powerful MIDI editing. MIDI Clips aren't QUITE capable of doing inline work (if you're really dead-set on it) but they're incredibly convenient. I don't even *have* a pattern block view anymore.

Well, to be clear, I never said I did. I was responding to the previous question. I think it could be nice for simplicity's sake - everything located in one window, but other than that things are working fine for me, right now :) I do love being able to see the midiclips in the playlist though!

Toxikator, do you keep one pattern per "track"? Because the pattern clips still require an actual pattern to exist, which is why I haven't found them to be that useful, but if you can share... :D

I have one instrument to one pattern for *most* things. For a beat, for example, I may have 6 sampler channels, or I may have a bassline with a synth and a doubled sine wave, but generally I don't.

Pattern clips are still patterns. They're just clips.
