Tape Saturators - recommendations? (free, moderate prices)

After watching some tutorials and generally liking the idea to "warm up" the sound (especially in the digital world), I'm looking for some saturators - specifically tape saturators or if there exists one for windows, a simulator that adds "cable hum" (decent, but still).

So far I'm using Baxxpander by Elogoxa. Magneto by Steinberg is nice, but it never had that good of a reputation. Tube saturation would be (one of the better ones IMO) Antares Tube (angel/devil tube - nice idea) - but it really sounds flat and digital, at least to my ears.

So yeah... any recommendations in the free or moderately prices sections? I'd prefer single units rather than multi FX modules - unless there's no other way.

Any comment (unless they're jokes of course) are greatly appreciated. ;)

There are a couple of Digitalfishphones plug-ins that might work for you. Namely THD and Dominion THD is not supported or developed any more but you can still download it from his site. Dominion has a lot more options than just saturation and I'm not sure but the saturation part of Dominion is probably closely linked to THD. I have used Dominion personally and it seems pretty good.

Edit: by the way here's his plug-ins page if you are interested. http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.p ... &subItem=1

Shameless, truely shameless.

RetroBand sure is nice though and thanks for the generous freebie version of it to get started with!

I love the sound of RetroBand (I only have the free one...so far). Find a sound you like cranked up, then turn it down until it's mellow. Works every time.

Hey Mike, I didn't see any sig, so I checked your site to see if it was down, and it is, which is why you signature images isn't showing.

Hm... the "eye" usually "listens" in, too. ;)
Maybe anything out there that looks like a tube/tape device? Just curious.

I have TbT TubeDriver, but really not my world. Dominion is more like a multiband compressor than a saturator.

Mabye I didn't get the concept of saturators right, but aren't they usually enhancers? Like Baxxpander (bass enhancer - also known as bass saturator) for example. Or Elogoxa X-Citer. Wouldn't exciters count to saturators, too? In this case BBE and CLAS would also be "saturators". Unless saturators are more like "distortion exciters" - for lower frequency bands only.

I've been seeing them all morning. They've never disappeared for me. Any chance you've inadvertently blocked them with a browser plug-in?

The site is working just fine. I've had reports from people around the world about the site not working on random occasions (about three times this far). I don't know what causes it, but it's not a problem on our end.

HOLY BAJEBUS! This GUI is huge! And looks so SynthEdit on the right side (x/y field) - then again I remember that "recording school" being releasing stuff on SE basis. They also have a vocal processor.

But what bugs me the most, especially this page tells me "you won't find a warmer, fatter sounding plugin". I know that's marketing in the first place, but reading that clearly ticks me off as there is no "best". And with these comments, the people could at least release A-B demos. Especially if it's a recording school.
