I think monthly would be crunching it pretty tight, for the judging, for the voting, and for the developers. Granted, if they just miss the deadline for one, they will have it ready for the next one.

We might also get rushed plugins that wouldn't do much good.

And this is coming from someone that probably has every freeware plugin imaginable. ;)

i think it doesn't matter if a plugin isn't polished. if it does something inventive and fun within the constraints of a specified theme/brief, it would be a bonus to have. it would be a sort of quarterly rutle through the bin outside the back of doc emmet brown's audio studio workshop!
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

Yeah, we saw how well that worked out.

boom.

common guys-
think about it. If it's once a year then it's a hyped up thing and the magz will be thirsty to cover it. If it's even twice a year it will fizzel out and lose momentum and peeps will lose interest. I have to say I was expecting a lot more hype around this event as it is.

Nah, if you set up the right rapport with the mags, they'll cover it. Maybe not Electronic Musician or Keyboard, but Computer Music and Future Music will.

Like I've mentioned before (I think liars&ashes mentioned it too), there's a good chance to get this big enough to get everyone using free plugs that can't afford "namebrand" ones, and see if we can curb piracy some. That can only help everyone in this industry.

honestly, as a dev, annually is just fine ;)

Who says EVERY dev has to enter EVERY comp. EVERYTIME?

Bah. Run it often. Keep the prize money low and thus, you are able to share it around AND reduce the jealousy factor. (my biggest prob. this year was only 1 winner, insane IMHO)

You could always alternate between the DC challenge and the music comp. too

Post

Only one winner? Oh no, there's 31 winners inside the competition and several thousand outside.

Monthly would be crazy, it would burnout completely within a year, no sense of an 'event' at all. Maybe 3 or 4 smaller themed events through the year (acoustic emulation/physically modelled, SE/SM creation, drum synth etc.) with a big 'open' competition like we've just had around xmas.

That's what I was thinking.. not necessarily having themes as that would limit the creativity some, but quarterly would probably work for most people.

And like I've mentioned, devs don't have to enter each one. :)

The people who suggest more than once a year, I'm guessing, are not devs. Once a year is fine, and a smaller prize pool - while doubtless appreciated - would be a joke for anybody putting in a decent amount of time - and if you don't put in a decent amount of time, chances are it's not going to be good.
The world has enough badly-thought out, thrown-together plugins. No more.

But we could have also winter and and spring contests for such smaller categories, with smaller prizes... Why not settle a KVR foundation ? Everybody could give some money from time to time and we should vote trhee or four times a year for our so gifted devs.
Sample banks aren't really in the same league of expertise as programming - though they're great. Different competition altogether for that, if at all-

I kinda with GaryG in this one I like the idea of having a compo every six months but maybe it should be one for effects and one for intruments/hosts. Just throwing that out there.
