Hard to say what "best" is without knowing what you're gonna use it for.

K2 and GS 3 are technically the most advanced, and are most widely supported by highend sample library developers.

But, depending on your intended application that might be irrelevant.

Mach 5 lacks some high end features, but it's biggest achilles heel is poor third party library support. Battery is great for drums, and while it can do other things, you wouldn't wanna use it to run an orchestral library...

Halion lacks some high end features, but it's easy to use and has better third party support than Mach 5. EXS is extremely efficient if you're a logic user, but severly lacking in high end features at this time. But also has better third party support than Mach 5.

Emulator X2 is probably in the same range as K2 and GS3 for sophistication, but it's newer and poorly supported by third parties (though fairly well supported by E-MU). Its filters are almost certainly the best of any soft sampler, maybe of any sampler period.

It also has a sophisticated tool set for sampling from an audio input (hard or soft). Most of these software 'samplers' don't sample at all...

What are you going to do with it? sample? Buy high-end libraries for it? Play SF2's? If you plan to use the huge Gigastudio libraries, then Gigastudio may be a good choice for you. If you plan to use REX loop CD's, you'll probably want REX support ;). etc.

I really really like Kontakt 2, and probably only still use less than 10% of it's features...

Oh yeah, and sfz is free, plays soundfonts, and has one of the best interpolation routines anywhere. It also has its own format (text-based), which is relatively powerful and even has a bit of third-party support.

No excuse to not have it, even if you own another sampler...

i was just wondering what you guys like more than anything... im going to use my sampler mostly for single hit stuff and a few mapped instruments... the modulation possibilities are important to me though - specially after using the emu for a while.... the hardware one that is... thanks guys...

Keep your eye on the Wusikstation 3 deal. I know that 'Technically' it's not a sampler, but it is really powerful, it's gonna be really cheap, and it's got great support and third party add-ons. It's also got an add-on pack that makes it into a true sampler. Furthermore, if you get the Extreme Sample Converter, you have it made.

I like GigaStudio, but many don't. SFZ and WAV files are good too :)
