Is it possible without my vocalist re-record a new track singing backup? Harmonizer is it?

Elevayta has a plugin for this (don't know the name), some hosts have pitch-shift (e.g. ACID), MHC Ensemble, Audiodamage Discord... Melodyne, LeapFrog Rephrase...

Melodyne's the master at this. complete control of pitch, duration and formant shift allows you to (almost) completely rewrite any monophonic melody line - it's expensive though.

Antares Autotune 5 has just come out - that has a much improved interface along the lines of Melodyne. Though, it is expensive AND requires an iLok thingy.

Elevayta's Choir boy is much cheaper alternative and might be worth you checking out as a starter.

You'll find granular pitch shifters to be most unsatisfactory for pure harmonies, and as you'll need to shift the formants to ensure realistic-ish vocals you won't find many free alternatives.

And of course, if you can get the singer back, you should..

Thanks alot for that summary Cinning, I think I have a few hundreds to burn. Anyway, I'm looking at Melodyne seeing it's the master at this stuff, was wondering, how does the process go by? Is it that, I record the vocals then plugin the VST?

Steinberg Voicemachine and some plugin from AKAI of which I forgot the name.
Both allows you to control the pitch via midi, and it does the formant shifting needed as well.
Not sure if either of em are for sale anymore though.

AKAI Pitchright.

And of course Kontakt 2 has decent algorithms as well... But Melodyne and Rephrase were specially made for this type of thing.

no probs! hey, atleast you're not looking for a free solution..

with melodyne you have a bridge which you insert into the track once you've recorded the vocal. the audio is then imported through the VST bridge into the melodyne app where you make your changes. the normal practise is that you would bounce down these adjusted vocal lines back into you host.

it's fairly fluid work flow, and they update on a regular basis (a team of three or so means they have very close contact to the customers).
a three-tier price/function scale makes it available for as little as
£99 (one track manipulation) up to £440 for the studio version with unlimited tracks, polyphonic-algorithm wicked-ness.

if you're doing a lot of vocals which might need tweaking to perfection, you need it. I haven't tried Rephrase so I can't say how it compares.

Guys, I bought the Melodyne software and am impressed so far but I was wondering, after changing keys for separate voicings, how do I save it as .wav separately? Any ideas?

hey fanir, the general idea with melodyne is that you create your backing vocals with the bridged app, then play the new version back into an audio track in your host.

I'm not too sure that I understand that mate, are you saying, it works as a sort of Vst/Rtas with my host? How?

the manual explains it better than I could on page 122.
briefly: you can playback your song and adjust your melodyne tracks as you please, but most of us run out of cpu, so general practise is to make your changes, and bounce back dow to the host.

I've not used RTAS so I can't comment on that.

I think he was asking about using Melodyne as a standalone.

Something I had wondered about as well, as I wanted to see if I could use it to change some dynamics of WAV files for fun.

Hi Dominus, indeed - if that was the question, then the file menu offers the 'save as audio' function from which you have a variety of options. you should download the demo and see if it suits you
