Say I want to create music with Orchestra samples and such. Anyone have experience with both these options and which product has the most realistic samples?

Post

EastWest long and by far. The question is, are you working live, or in a studio?

Post

Mainly studio but live also.
My main concern for realistic sounds would be studio.

Then without a doubt, I'd recommend either the Gold, or the Platinum editions of the Symphonic Orchestra. With Platinum you get more articulations, and all three mic positions. With Gold you get a few close mic'ed articulations, with the majority being far (audience) mic'ed. It's a matter of money though.

For live use, I'd use a Motif ES, a Roland XV, or even the Fantom.

BTW, you could also check out Kirk Hunter Emerald for only $325 US. The sounds are so-so though.

Awesome, I will check it out.

Studio : EWQL.
Live : Fantom/Motif.

For a much lower price but of similar quality, you must take a look at Kirk Hunter's Emerald.

Similar quality, no, not by a long shot. For $495 US I'd rather get the Gold edition on sale until Dec 31st.

I don't understand why these uber expensive and giga sized orchestras are so popular. Are people honestly exploiting them fully? They need every single little nuance or articulation? I'm doing lots of great things just with the GPO pocket in dimension pro and the orch stuff that comes in Kontakt2.

Seriously how can you justify the disk space/cost? Unless you are some kind of incredible composer what is the point?

 Sorry just asking.

it took me two days two use all the articulations in the silver xp version :) so yes. absolutely. and there's lots of things i feel i am missing still.. so there are certain orchestral things which i have to "fake".

Post

but then again.. i am some kind of incredible composer ;)

People that need ultra-realistic orchestral sounds use these libraries. Even the best ones today are hard to tweak to actually fool anyone into thinking a real orchestra is playing. But that's exactly what all the film, TV, video game (etc) composers in the world aim to do. Myself included. ;)

Post

ok. But is the client actually saying "that orchestra violin doesn't sound like a real _____" whatever articulation?
