Seeing as no-one has mentioned 303s now for at least a week, I thought I'd update you all on Tau2's progress

We've managed to achieve a lot of our emulation goals but there are a few model parameters (mostly to do with gain scaling) that still need to be tweaked, and the accent circuit isn't modelled at all yet.

Rather than some dull, static MP3s this time I've recorded a few bars of me tweaking the cutoff, envmod and resonance controls one by one on the 303, and then the same again on Tau2 via a Gmedia Phatboy. As you can see for yourself, the sound is exceptionally close

We're also working very closely with a dedicated group of 303-owning beta testers - I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank them for the time they've put into this project!

Can you maybe post a few square wave long attack wails? I think you know what i am talking about.

I think it's great imo. I am no purist and never had 303 so my approval doesn't amount to much, but i like it.

Ummm, not really sure I'm imagining the right kind of sound. Do you just mean like a long sweep?

I don't know how to describe it. I would just like to hear some slides involving square wave. Everyone has their own mental image of what 303 sounds like - mine involves square wave and hollow slide sound.

Don't sweat it if i am still being cryptic. I am pleased with what i hear anyway.

Pretty good.

So that's a 303, eh? Beats me what anyone sees in that. I'm definitely not buying one.

The sound of the 303 really I think only comes alive once you've compressed it, and stuck it through a tonne of delay, distortion and chorus. The naked sound is a bit on the dry side I'll agree

303 sound is a special ingredient that defines certain type of music. So if your goal is to write that particular music and you are very critical about the detail and authenticity - you need to have a real 303 or make sure that whatever you use fools everyone to believe they area hearing a real 303.

Heck, I use Tau (free) for stuff that isn't even a "certain type of music".

Still, I can't believe that you need to "fool everyone" into thinking you can write a good tune...

Say Dave, are you getting rid of the note-overlapping problem in Tau (1)? Namely, if you play a C3 that overlaps a following C3, the second note will turn off when the first ends. Seems to be a case where a Note Off will cancel any number of previous Note On messages.

Yes - Tau 2 has a retrigger mode more like Tau Pro so it will "remember" the held note and switch back to it when the temporarily played note is released. In this way, you can hold a note and then play little wiggly trills etc.

Hrm, I thought that Tau 1 did that already. Still, the problem was when two of the *same* note were played (overlapping durations): not possible from the keyboard, but doable from your sequencer.

Essentially:

Yields:

When it should yield:

I'll have to recheck this to make sure I'm seeing this behavior for sure...

Most often I'll use Tau with a 303-style step sequencer I've written as an MFX plug-in. In order to create a slide between notes, I overlap them by a few ticks. Sliding between two of the *same* notes should play as a "tie" between their durations, and many monosynths meet my expectations in this regard.

However, Tau cuts off the second note when the first one turns off, rather than adding their durations together.

And that is why I want to overlap identical notes!
