Sliding between two of the *same* notes should play as a "tie" between their durations
When the second note-on is received, the synth should re-trigger the voice. Why should the synth ignore the note on, even if it is for a note already being played? makes no sense to me, I can't think of a single reason to code this behaviour for this case!

Saw sounds ok (even if the chosen parameters are the easiest to clone).
But square is not close to the real machine. That was also the problem in Rebirth : deepness "problem" with square wave.
To me, typical "hard to clone" setting : cut off from 3 to 10, reso to 0, envmod 5 to 10, decay to 0, accent to 10.

I relish a challenge so here goes. Both 303 and Tau2 were set to:
Wave: Square
Cutoff: 50%
Resonance: 0%
EnvMod: 50%
Decay: 0%

Accent is not yet modelled on Tau2 so the pattern on the 303 did not include any accent notes.

Guess which is which!

Very interesting demo, Dave. Both sounds have things about them that I like. The first one has a nice, clear sound to it. The second one sounds a bit muddier, but it has a chunkier bottom end - which is what I noticed about all the other demos of the actual 303. That's why I'm going to guess that the second one is the real one. I like them both, and I can't figure out which one I like more. I love a nice, clear sound. But then, I am a bass player... and I do like a little "extra junk in the trunk," so to speak. For those of you on the wrong side of the Atlantic, that means fat ass.

Right. Which it does. But then both notes stop when the note-off for the first note is received.

It doesn't ignore it: it should glide to the new note (if retrig is off) just as any monosynth would. Only the distance is essentially zero when the notes are the same.

Well, perhaps an audio example will make more sense. I'll whip one up tonight after work.

Perhaps you should really consider rewriting your MFX plugin so that it sends just one note-off and note-on for tied notes. That would make 100% more sense and would work with Tau and Tau2 equally well.

While you're at it, you could add an option to cut the notes short by 1/32 of a beat just like the real 303 sequencer does. Don't bother simulating the 4ms latency in between the gate pulse going high and the envelope starting though....

PS - we should continue this discussion offline, this thread is for gathering reactions to the way Tau2 sounds

The first time you posted a demo someone remarked that one sounded "flabby" and that was the Tau. Demo 2 has a bit more of that low, though not by nearly as much as a few weeks ago.

But the clincher to me is that in demo 1 there is something clicky at the beginning of each note that is completely absent in demo 2. Moreover, it's not consistent in demo 1, so I'd say demo 1 is the real bucket of transistors.

I like the sound of demo1 better. It's less boomy.

I'm not going to reveal which is which for a while yet :D
C'mon Easymode, your views would be appreciated.

i'd like to know how more oldschoolish acid basslines sound alike with tau2 (including slides from highest to lowest octave with accent on the first and slide on the 2nd note and stuff as well as beeing played at the lowest octave.)

does the name armando ring a bell? :)

real 303 is the first

Bit obscure for me, but Google knows all....I understand he was label-mates on Trax with Phuture. I might be able to dig up something, any particular choon?

100 % of disin you.
Have it on a "serious beats" compil i guess. This is history.

real 303 is the first
...and I made it easy by leaving the 303's distinctive background "whine" in

Any more suggested "difficult" control settings? I think Tau2 is actually coming off very well here so I don't mind having another go.

i dont seem to see how any1 can improve on the propellerheads version of the 303 , which many have compared with the real thing and concluded that its 99.9% of the real thing and in many ways better(like convenience etc) , so i dunno y u'd spend so much time to do it again
