a 100 year old upright piano (wavs and EX2 bank)

The samples are mono and miced extremely close to the soundboard. I sampled A on every octave, moving the mic to be as close to the hammer, of the note I was sampling, as possible. Two velocity layers: one really hard and the other a normal hit.

The wavs are 32bit/44.1

I also made an EX2 bank. The bank is larger because I used the original 32/96khz files in it.

Thanks for sharing ...
I just bought Sampler for Live6, so I'll load 'em up and check 'em out later :D

cool! I hope they are useful.

Only one note per octave? I'm interested in how that sounds!

I just played it my EX2 patch on my midi keyboard. The biggest problem is the lack of velocity layers. With note crossfading the transitions from octaves are not noticeable and the interpolation of Emulator X2 is very good. I don't hear any artifacts at all. Also since most of the notes are around twelve second long pitching them up is not too much of a problem.

Next time I do it I'm going to use a device (weights I guess) that helps me sample at least five velocity layers.

cool,thanks.is there a pic?

GJ, you could ask LearJeff about his technique for velocity layers. He describes it in this document, but specifics of his keythumper might be useful..

Thanks for your interest guys. I'll take a pic of piano this morning and pm LearJeff.

Post

Well the cameria is being used for a while so the pic will have to wait.

't's ok,it's an added bonus to have a pic.thanks for trying. :)

I'll take a pic tonight for a thread bump.

I was just reading LearJeff's technical details on sampling his Rhode, it appears he did not use a key thumper. I assume he just did it by hand. I'll PM and see if I can get a definitive answer.

"I sampled every 4th white key, starting with F1. I'd intended to use a jury-rigged "key thumper" to strike the keys with consistent velocity, but I didn't use it because it too much noise, which came through on the recording (bam!). I started with three velocity layers, but added a 4th between the mezzo and forte layers, from middle C down, because it really needed it."

Post

Yup, by hand, watching the peak meter. I'd checked out the peak response along the keyboard to begin with and just matched that curve more or less, focusing more on being smooth and consistent than "accurate".

Someone else made a thumper for Rhodes, but it doesn't do the highest velocities (well, I like a really high top velocity on Rhodes, maybe not so necessary on piano).

BTW, the paragraph above is for jRhodes1. For jRhodes3 I used 5 layers, planned from the start. Next time I'll use more, and more at the higher velocities. And hopefully, using RMS rather than peak levels, if I can find or write a plugin for the purpose.

Post

Jeff, I can write you a variable window RMS plug if you like. I have a few things to finish, but I'll get it done :)
