In that pricerange I would suggest ManyGuitar from Manytone:

Wide range of sounds, both single notes and chords and a built-in amp sim. You even get some acoustic guitars and basses thrown in for good measure.

It's a bit difficult to compare the two as they have slightly different focus. ManyGuitar is an all-in-one package with single notes, chords, electrics, acoustics and basses while Vintaudio is all about 4 single note multi-sampled electric guitars. Quality-wise I'd say they're pretty comparable. With ManyGuitar you get on-board FX which is nice and of course you add some more sound colours to your palette.

Just outside your budget range there's Lyrical Distortion from www.beladmedia.com which might also be worth a look. You've already mentioned Prominy LPC and at that end of the spectrum there's also the upcoming Chris Hein Guitars from www.chrishein.net which looks pretty impressive.

justjazz wrote:Yes - Chris Hein's stuff looks great but it's just priced too high for me. I think he's missing part of the market by not having single downloadable instruments. The thing I liked about the monzter sounds is that they were so well produced and work outside the box. They're just a bit too hard a sound for me.
I wonder if Virtual Guitarist 2 would be a good fit for your needs.

I really like these free samples:

justjazz wrote:I've got VG2 right now. It's fine for basic backing chords, but not really playable enough to be an "instrument". I think you've also used RealGuitar 2 - if so you probably know what I mean. VG2 cranks out basic backing tracks but I find I don't get as much control or as full of a sound with it.
I think that's a bit harsh on RealGuitar 2. It's a lot more than just a backing tracks player - it's capable of some very expressive stuff in the right hands. Listen to some of the work by Kevvvv and you'll see what I mean. RG Electric might be great too... one day... maybe... if they ever release it...

Sorry - misunderstood you! I'm a big RG2 fan but need an electric guitar solution, so threads like this are of interest to me. The only problem is that I don't have a "proper" high end sampler to run the libraries. Kontakt or Halion or... what? What would you recommend to make the biggest possible number of sounds available?

Post

Being an old HALion fan it saddens me to say this but at the moment I would recommend Kontakt 2. It has more features and especially the scripting can make a big difference when it comes to playability and expressivity. It will also load instruments from Kompakt player VSTi:s which can also be a plus.

As for availability of sounds it seems developers are favouring Kontakt over HALion - two of the biggest guitar libraries, LPC and Lyrical Distortion, are only available for Kontakt and GigaStudio.

That's really useful - thanks.
