Huh? I had the ESQ-1 apart and didn't see any pots for tuning the filters, otherwise I would have. All I meant was, the (hardware) ESQ-1's filters don't all match EXACTLY. But they're close. Much closer than the dramatic shift in the SQ8L.

Anyway, the quote from the readme I made above explains exactly what I'm seeing. He doubled the mod range on the filter but kept the same value scale. So 100% keyboard tracking now becomes 200%. x amount of envelope mod of the filter now becomes 2x. Think I'll send him an email and try to talk him into a more reasonable strategy.

Gotcha. When you mentioned the different tuning of the filters, I was reminded of the ability of the esq-1 to reset/tune the filters (to one another?) in one of the menus.

Really? :o Where?

punch "record+filter"

it's one of those hidden functions, but Butchy recommends retuning after changing the battery.
I've said tuning, but more precisely it recalibrates them.

Oh... you know, I checked out Butchy's site when I first got this ESQ-1 (used to belong to my original musical partner -momo-... we used to use it on our music collaborations circa 1986-87. He gave it to me this year because it had dead keys, lost its memory, and he was sick of the digital sounds and was just wasting closet space for him... I fixed it all up and now use it mostly for stringy pads, which it does just fine without awful aliasing or artifacts) and now that you mention it, I think I did run that before. The display it makes felt very familiar. Still, after doing that the filters are still definitely a BIT off... (do you know what those numbers mean? Is that a measure of the filter cutoff BEFORE adjustment, or AFTER? Or is it a measure of the bias factor?)

Its hard to say for sure how close the filters are as the filter resonance doesn't go high enough to self-oscillate. Wish I could mod that (as I did on my JX-3P which now whistles like a synthesizer should :hihi:)

Anyway, thanks for reminding me about that. Like I said, they were only a little bit off, and they still seem a little bit off but as the filters aren't playable anyway, that's fine... just makes the synth that much more organic sounding. But my point was, SQ8L's cutoff is WAY OFF from the same patches played on the real item. I've send Siegfried an email suggesting my idea, we'll see what he thinks.

Wow. I have spent the last hour a/b this with my Sq80 both hooked to a mixing desk adjusting volumes listening for differences and sometimes I was not sure which synth I was listening to. The pattern of difference over time is the real SQ80 filter of course which has a presence not quite captured by this Vsti. In its own right this Vsti is simply stunning.

man this thing sounds good :o !!

why? i mean, should it really sound this excellent? it's just a digital synth...

i hope that it's not just in my brain, like the thrill of having a new synth or whatever.

but wow, seriously nice. and just in time too, since i was trying really hard to get the right sound out of a couple of VAs yesterday, and just couldn't seem to nail it. This fits right in, like i made the track especially for it :D

thanx for pointing it out.

Maybe it's the fact that it doesn't sound so clean? Like the origional Esq-1. Most vsti's sound uber clean and glassy to me a lot of the time. I still haven't tried this vsti out yet...60gb main drive went south grrr

Post

Sorry to hear about the hard drive,, could be the best vsti ever. Thanks to Tomg for xcellent presets.

thanx tomg !

Wow, thanks tomg for converting all those presets! Over 2400 presets, my god this will take me hours to audition all these ;-) (by taking 10 seconds for one preset you need nearly 7 hours without interruption :help:)
