SQ80 emulating VSTi available

HS, I forgot how much I liked these synths (esq,sq-80). Even today, they have a great, unique sound.

This plugin really looks beautiful.
Cannot get it to output any sound though.

It indicates the number of voices used and "produces" some cpu load but not the slightest trace of any audio on its stereo outs when played via midi or by clicking the keyboard. Tried several of the factory presets.

Using Ableton Live 5.2 as a host.
Did I miss something essential here?

I just tried it out in 5.2 and it works for me.

Will try uninstalling and re-installing the plugin next.
Does it perhaps need admin privs to work properly? Or some other special treatment after installation?
Normally I delete VSTs that give no sound straight away but will make an exception here...

Thanks very much to all involved in this. A very good friend of mine had an SQ80 back in the 80s. He also a number of other Ensoniq instruments. Some very cool things he used to do with them.

Compyfox... awesome site. I don't believe I've seen it before. On the entries for the M1 and the Wavestation you forgot to mention that the Legacy edition adds resonant filters and that the M1 can now be used multitimbrally. Those particicular emus sound fantastic too, btw. In fact, BETTER than the originals. They really screwed up on the original release of the Wavestation and it sounded a few shades worse than the original (as if they had compressed the waveforms?). But now it's all fixed and sounds fabulous.

I played already quite a bit with the demo and decided to make a little comparison mp3 with some of my favourite classic ESQ1 / SQ80 sounds:

I think it sounds already very close to the original (enough to be more than useful in fact). I am sooo excited about this!!!!!!! Pretty much all my classic favourite synths are now available as plugins - Korg, PPG, Prophet, SQ80 - I think I'm in heaven!

Thanks for the comments on the "equivalents list". Just finished updating it (and working on updating my old thread).

I tried to keep the informations fairly simple. Only added stuff like "can load SYSEX" or in case of the Casio synths that they use ADSR instead of 8-stage filters. Most emulations have a higher polyphony and several enhancements over their predecessors anyway, so there's no "real need" mentioning that.

So Chris... can we except some awesome "Turrican-like" presets from you in the near future?

And yeah... it's definitely cool that the Waldorf Edition is available once again. Though having the old "Steinberg Version" I don't need no update "yet". But we'll see what Waldorf pops out till next NAMM and Musikmesse.

If this is what I think it is, this project has been much anticipated on my part. Over a year ago I was in communication with Rainer about doing a VST emulation and he told me of a project going on at the time by one of his students to do a full-on digital emulation of the ESQ1 using the original Code.

Don't know if Rainer participates on this forum...if so it'd be nice for some confirmation if this is his student's project

Here's our last email conversation:

Q. "BTW: How is your student's SQ80 project going? Isn't it past time that it was completed?"

A. "He's a perfectionist. Whenever I give him a new set of sounds he compares the results of his emulation against the real machine and starts fine-tuning again. So far, the emulation sounds pretty close, also emulates the (now confirmed) DOC bug, but the filters still need some fine-tuning to give a more realistic emulation.

Overall, the plugin sounds pretty close to an SQ80/ESQ1 if one can live with the fact that the filter is not 100% authentic.

Definitely... please think about creating some Turrican-like presets (if not "the" presets). I always tried to get this sound with my Kurzweil and Synth1, but this SQ8L definitely makes the difference.

So there's big collections of the sounds, but they are in gz format (sigh). If I go to the trouble of downloading a decompressor that'll do gz, can I then load the sound banks in as banks?
