Great, DSP!! See a thread I just posted requesting one. Also, this would be a big help for me on a project I've been wanting to do, but I'm having trouble getting started with the GUI end. It would automate this whole process, and avoid needing velocity layers at all. Well, automate everything but playing the notes and recording them ...

Ah, yes ... well, even a relatively simple example would be a big help! There is a plugin that I think would do, free from sonalksis.
Thanks,
Jeff

Glad this topic has caused some interest in velocity related tool creation.

Duncan, would a Delphi example use a widget set that I could use from C++?
Or heck, maybe I should just get the free Delphi distribution and go with it. Heard many good things about it, and what's one more language? Just another tool in the box.
Genetic_junk -- I'm convinced that it's possible to do a much better job at automatic sample assembly than any tools I'm aware of. (However, I haven't tried the latest crop from Chicken Systems & Extreme Translator -- maybe they read my idea threads and implemented it, which would be great.)
BTW, I forgot to mention a hardware item that could be very handy, called the "Pianobar". It's a bar that sits over the keys and transmits MIDI as you play the piano. Using a device like that would allow associating samples with actual MIDI velocities rather than trying to infer that from peak or RMS levels.

For low velocities, couldn't you just try small weights like those used to counterbalance old fashioned scales? (They are tube shaped.) Won't a given weight deliver the same velocity down on each key, so long as the distance the key and hammer travel are the same for each note? (And so long as the weight is placed on, not dropped on, each key...)
On the other hand, this gets you into the problem of whether or not you want the real velocity layers for the upper register, where the same pressure that you apply to the lower register will often give you softer sounds.
