Hello there,
i'm a guitarist and am absolutly not conversant with midi stuffs in general. I've been browsing the forum but couldn't find an answer, sorry if my question is silly or redondant.
Here's the question:
i've got a usb-keyboard and a a bunch of .wav samples (the G-town Sampling Project) that consists of sampled instruments with sometimes 4 velocities per note.
I would like to map the notes on my keyboard and attribute the different velocities of one note to one key so that the programm lauchs "C1 - pp" when I hit the note gently and "C1 - ff" when it's stronger.
If i could then save the whole lot somewhere as a soundfont or whatever so I can use it in some other context, it would be perfect.
I've tried HighLite, Loopazoid and Cyberfree but couldn'T get to succeed.
Thanks

Depending on what else you want to do with those samples (eg filter them) you're looking at a wide variety of software.
The commercial stuff typically has the best sample mapping but you could use a 3rd-party utility for that (Awave, Extreme Sample Convertor, Chicken Systems Translator etc), and something cheap or free (The free sfz soundfont player, for example). Not that many samplers save stuff in other formats (eg soundfont) though.
For 'full featured' samplers, you could look at
ShortCircuit
VSampler
Kontakt
and possibly even the sample-based synths like
WusikStation
Dimension Pro
A fuller list is at http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php?mode=re ... =2&rpp=100

An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

OK, there are not sooo much good freeware samplers; it could be done with Highlife. If you don't like it, you could try sfz (http://www.rgcaudio.com/products.htm). It reads soundfonts, but you can make your own multisamples as well, using the open sfz format . It looks a little bit complicated at the beginning as you have to write your multisample patches using a text editor, but don't worry. simple sample mapping is easy. Check http://www.rgcaudio.com/sfzformat.htm.

There's also sfzed, the sfz format editor.... http://audio.clockbeat.com/sfZed.htmlsteponeloops wrote:OK, there are not sooo much good freeware samplers; it could be done with Highlife. What about Computer Music DS404 thats free, but it does have some quirks depending on what your using it for. Shortciruit is not bad, and there is a restricted free version. Anything more than that you have to pay, esspecialy if your talking about verlocities and mapping, and they are overkill. You can get a free soundfont maker called Viena at http://www.synthfont.com/ Sonic Assault have a free multi-wave player at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jez.price/ which is quite good.

I thought all the GTown stuff came in a number of formats - including Giga, Kontakt and SF2? Don't remember any that were just wav

ok, thanks.
I've seen a GigaSapmler and a Reason version of the G-Town but don't own any of those softwares.
I'll try the stuffs you've said but it looks quite complicated, especially for someone who just want to trigger the sounds without any effect or whatever. I don't need something good, i need something simple
I forgot to say i need a VSTi. I'll have a deeper look at HighLite and others.
Thanks

"Really simple": sfz as sample player (play SF2 and SFZ formats)
If you need to map these samples to SF2, (not so simple): Creative's Vienna or AWave
If you need to map these samples to SFZ, only a simple text editor (and some knowledge of the SFZ format http://www.rgcaudio.com/sfz.htm ) is needed

I like simple programming - its another reason I like RM-4 as a drum sampler, I have recently been trying out Direct Wave from image line which is another pretty simple to program thing.
Power Players with fairly big sample libraries provided, are NI Kontakt (or however its spelt) and RGC/Cakewalk Dimension Pro.
I have not used EXS, Reason or Giga - but they too are discussed a lot.

What about Grizzly from the KVR developer challenge ? It doesn't look bad at all.
I have the same needs as you and haven't been able to find any good freeware before.
I haven't tried this one out yet, but I sure will next time I have a concert to do
