i love the era of music though, so i'm biased :) i was big into the mod scene around the same time as i couldn't afford a keyboard/synth or any of the gadgets. the most i had was a casiotone POS and a tape recorder back then :) but my sb16 and impulse tracker was all i needed :)

i kind of like this version better. it feels more authentic and sincere than the mastered one. :)

but then i like 8bit 11khz sound :) hehe. so dont go by me.

Damn, Chris, that's so much better than the ESQ-1 tunes I was making as a teen back in the 80s!! Great stuff - has a lot of retro/nostalgia charm.

I should dig up my old 4-track tapes and find some ESQ-1 stuff for everyone to laugh at...
please do. if i had any tapes of my crap back then i'd share them even if they sucked but i dont. just MODs/ITs/S3Ms :) nothing as cute or good as chris' stuff though.

I found another interesting track... this one was made even earlier than the other piece (and in fact a world premiere, because it was never released ;) ) and this time it's just the ESQ1 with the internal sequencer:

Just ran regedit.exe and reassinged all the paths after a manual folder install and she is going like the clappers...

BTW : "path_data" , "path_dll" and "path_user" all had the correct file paths.
The default file path was the one causing the problem here as it installed without one what so ever.

Okay, can anyone explain this to me like I'm seven years old, I can't get a single squeak out of this thing.
I've installed it using setup.exe and manually, It's currently hibernating in D:\Cubase SL\vstplugins\Vintage and I have the following registry settings:

(Default) nothing
path_data D:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\Vintage\SQ8L\data
path_dll D:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\Vintage\
path_user D:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\Vintage\SQ8L\user

I've tried copying the SQ8L folder to the root on D: and change the registry settings, but it's still dead as a dodo.

What's the default file path you're referring to?

Try changing path_dll to
path_dll D:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\Vintage\SQ8L

It should work.

Here's what me and musical buddy -momo- were doing in 1986 on his ESQ-1 (which I now have after doing a big repair job on it last year).

We were in our 2nd year at university, had been making synth music together for the previous year. Momo had got his ESQ-1 that summer, it is testament to his trust and generosity that by winter he was leaving it over at my place for weeks at a time. But our gear always did the best stuff when we got it all together, so it wasn't uncommon for "the studio" to float between our two places.

Anyway, one night Momo came over to visit his ESQ-1 while I was out having a drink. Before I left him there with it, I made a 1 bar sequence of a simple, happy little melody, played on a high pitched bell/steel drum type patch that I had named "BRMUDA" if I remember correctly. I forget why, think I was just joking around or maybe demoing the new patch.

When I returned a few hours later, Momo was gone but the ESQ-1 was on and there on it's sequencer display was a new song called "LISTEN". So I did. Momo had built a few different patterns around my little melody, featuring a really neat syncopated double tracked piano part. You ESQ-1 fans will recognise a lot of the original factory patches in this!

I then spent a few hours arranging these patterns into a song, and adding a few other instrument overdubs (I think the ICYORG bit is mine, as well as the "French horn solo" ;) ) It wasn't very typical of our songs at the time, generally it was much cutsier than anything I'd have written intentionally at the time, but it just kind of fell together this way and now, 2 decades later, I think it's actually one of our stronger songs.

Normally we'd use a drum machine synced to the ESQ-1, but we had a crappy hi-hat sound I had programmed, along with the factory patch KIKSIM (or something like that). So this was a rare (in fact I think our only) all-ESQ-1 production.

Then I put that down to 2 tracks on a 4 track casette (with a bit of reverb from a Yamaha SPX-90) and wrote some lyrics and recorded them double tracked on the other two tracks with some echo.

The next day I presented Momo with a tape labelled "Listen" and our first virtual collaboration was born! Pretty "cyber" for 1986! ;)

OK do the following.
1.Create a folder called "SQ8L" in your VST folder
IE:D:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\VintaD:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\Vinatge\SQ8L
ge\SQ8L

2.Do not use the installer.

3.Transfer all bank .dll and other files bar the setup.exe to that one folder from the extracted zip.

4.Open Cubase and load SQ8L VST you will get the interface and no sound.

5.Run regedit.exe

6.You will see the following
(Default) nothing
path_data D:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\Vintage\SQ8L\data
path_dll D:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\Vintage\
path_user D:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\Vintage\SQ8L\user

7.Click on My Computer Dribe D and go to the VST plugins folder and click on the SQ8L folder do this while regedit is open.

8.Copy and paste the "D:\Cubase SL\Vstplugins\Vinatge\SQ8L" to all of the following ....

Dafault
path_data
path_dll
path_user

9.Close Regedit

10.Open Cubase SL

11.Run SQ8L

12.load banks and enjoy

Holy crap, I'm having so many flashbacks now...that's a fun tune, AQ! Love the story.

Oh yes, I recognize the factory presets in that tune.

Here I thought I was the only one who knew the ESQ-1 so well...I used that thing for years...well beyond it's time.

SQ8L Banks
I'm trying to get the "SQ8L Banks" file but I'm getting a "Page URL Not Found" error. Anybody else with the same problem?
