I'm putting it out there right now...any product marketed in the above named manner will be purchased by me (perhaps twice), soley for the comedic value. What can I say? I have a dark sense of humor.

Oh and I love John Lennon and the Beatles so it's not about that.

And IK's got it wrong if they think pimpin' products out is easy. Pimpin' ain't easy.

Can we all agree that IK isn't seriously promoting pimping? At worst it was a failed attempt to be cool. I'd be more offended by the fact that it was just bad advertising than try and find any deeper meaning behind it. Sure, Bobby and aMused kind of have a point, but it is rather reactionary. If you're a liberal you should be all for allowing companies to say whatever they want, instead of playing PC police. That's where the left really went wrong if you ask me. And it seems like you're just looking to be offended if you refuse to take it in good humor (this isn't Michael Richards we're talking about here).

If you don't like the ad, you should be voicing your opinion to IK directly (or at least in the Everything Else section), not going on the forum of a company that's partnered with them (i.e. not IKMM) and trying to start up a boycott. And let's face it; we've all seen more egregious and misogynist things in advertising. IK was probably just trying to make their advertising stand out a little by being a little silly, and it's apparently worked.

It seemed more tongue in cheek to me. The Supermodel/supermodeling thing was more distasteful. I mean last week on the Simpson's Homer was pimpin' out his ice cream truck.

Those kids today...

Precisely. It's SLANG. In marketing what can offend one person can excite another. It's nothing new. Pick up a guitar magazine if you wanted be offended more. Sure one can criticize hip hop culture, rock n' roll and associated defiant, controversial or the transcending meaning of words... But, from a marketing standpoint if it is already the jargon of many of the users (or potential users) of the product then if the ad communicates, strikes a chord or whatever then it does what it is supposed to do. I am sure some people would rather it say something more safe and generic like "make your studio swell" but there's no hook to that.

When there's jargon and slang the meaning of the words are no longer the same as Beergeek noted. "Pimp your studio" does not mean "being a pimp for hookers is a fantastic thing to do" (although I could see Harmony Gardens putting that in his sig... okay a freakin' JOKE is allowed or am I going to get criticized for making light of this... perhaps misinterpret it as approval for that lifestyle too? Sense of humor is a MUST around here and I think most people on KVR agree with THAT!).

Anyway, please read the forum rules. We can't allow anyone to use SR forum to rally people to boycott anything SR may be associated with so it was edited out and really the whole thread should be deleted just for that. Complete disregard for that seems to be intentional.

Oh I see you guys made some good responses about word meaning in context already. That's obviously a huge difference! The word means something different in this sense and it is a "saying". The saying means simply "Trick out your studio", but by saying "Pimp your studio" it is a little more rough. It gets your attention. I like "Trick out" as well actually. I am not THAT hip either (but hipper than Beergeek I think! )

The important thing to know is that it isn't intended to be harmful to anyone. That I can assure you. It's certainly not intended to be racist or suggest violence toward women or even be that profane by today's standards. Maybe some of the lyrics of the artists that use the products do (and more blatantly... hence some of the Parental Advisory stickers).

Also reference "pimp your auto" in the VW commercials, MTV has that whole "pimp your car" thing... probably a ton of other uses (like the Simpsons reference)... if it is a saying in modern culture that means a certain thing then unless one is conservative (and the music industry is hardly that) then it's one of many hip phrases that could be used to get a point across.

Anyway, I may possibly close this thread. It's not appropriate for the SR forum. Plus you used the word "bitch" and we're very offended by it. (just kidding, you can call me bitch any time you want and I wouldn't be offended... even though it means female dog technically speaking... so the meaning has transcended TWICE. From literal to deragatory to a term of affection toward a guy! Ref: Swingers baby "Word up bitch!" )

aMUSEd, I will agree to disagree with you, but I want to say that I respect where you are coming from. You usually have an eloquent way of putting things (even if, sometimes, I vehemently disagree).

To IK, I saw the humor in the ad (ala the parallels to "Pimp My Ride") and am not offended in the least.

Yeah, and out of respect for Squids (even though his comments are mistaken imho) I will have to call it quits anyway and also agree to differ - peace and thanks

Mistaken because it is Pimp Your Ride as opposed to Pimp Your Car. ;) Who knows, this isn't something I say. "Yo pimpin'".

Ok. Alls well that ends well. Topic closed.
