No, I believe he means the one that's on its edge, played with a mallet to either side (or one mallet, and the other hand used to damp the opposite head).

I loved playing the big f**k-off bassdrum in band in middle school. When the conductors were out of the room we would really give it a wack. And you could tune it just about as low as you can hear.
