I want to be able to run Kontakt 2 sample libraries. I believe that some of the latest ones use Kontakt's scripting facilities (?) which helps add performance features. The Prominy guitar samples are an example I think.

Question - must I buy the full Kontakt to run libraries like this? Would Kompakt to it? Would anything else (eg DirectWave) do it? Kontakt is v expensive but if it's the only option, I'll have to start saving...

You need Kontakt 2 to run Kontakt libraries. Kompakt is being phased out of the product line, and does not support the scripting engine. Kontakt libraries can be saved as a single monolithic file, or with externally referenced .WAV files. So depending on the library, you could load the individual WAVs into another program. You can also use something like Extreme Sample Converter to translate Kontakt libraries into other formats.

Thanks. That's really useful info re Kompakt, I'm way behind. I have ESC, but I guess if I want to run libraries that use script for performance features I really need Kontakt. Which costs loads of cash. Or I could go DirectWave for much less cash and settle for non-scripted libraries. It's a tough call.

Personally, I think Kontakt is the greatest sampler ever made, and totally worth the money. Others will disagree... someone always does!

Also, Kompakt has been discontinued from NI (I'm still a bit peeved about it, having just bought it last year myself...)

You know, I still have to laugh when people talk about something like Kontakt costing loads of cash. It costs NOTHING, compared to what I spent on my Emu Emax... or my ESI-32 with 32 megs of RAM, or my Kurzweil K2000 with 32 megs, hard drive, and sampling option! That all must add up to somewhere around $10,000! :-o

I know what you mean, although I've never had that kind of money to spend on music. I do recall my hard-pressed parents saving like mad to get me a Casio CZ1 many years ago, which I can now pretty much emulate with freeware... Kontakt does look fabulous and I may just have to save like mad for ages. It's expensive compared to other software I use, but it's probably worth it. Will have to get a demo and play with it, I think.
