I need a GOOD mellotron soundset (preferably soundfont)

All the mellotron stuff I've heard sounds absolutely crap compared to those I've heard on albums. I want something that sounds very similar to that used on Opeth's latest album, "Ghost Reveries". With heavy tremelo. I guess I'm just after the "organ-like" sound - have no interest in the other mellotron sounds.

Maybe the Mellotron soundsets are fine and you just need a good Leslie or tremelo effect.

I don't know of any Mellotron sounds that have tremelo. The Mellotron itself didn't. So obviously if you're after a sound with tremelo, it came from an FX added after the synt.
The best Mellotron sounds I've heard come from the M-Tron by GMedia and the sample sets by hollowsun.com.

That's interesting. I'd seen a few live vids of bands playing what I thought was a mellotron with really heavy tremelo. Might have been something else.emdot_ambient wrote:I don't know of any Mellotron sounds that have tremelo. The Mellotron itself didn't. Will check it out, cheers.emdot_ambient wrote: The best Mellotron sounds I've heard come from the M-Tron by GMedia and the sample sets by hollowsun.com.
Anyone know any others?

I would try and post a short clip (or a link to a clip) of the sound you're talking about. I don't know anything about Opeth, but hearing what you're talking about might help us in identifying the sound, or at least give you some starting points as to how you could approximate it.

The best sample set on the market is this one:
http://www.mellotron.com/cdlist.htm
It's in Akai format, but I think it will load into most samplers. If you only want one sound (eg: MkII Violins), these are decent:
http://www.mi7libraries.com/main/sample ... .jsp?id=32
Of course, you could always wait for the new Streetly M4000 Mellotron and have the real thing.

Still very could have been a Mellotron, but run through a tremelo or rotating speaker effect. Mellotrons had only tape speed and tone controls on them, IIRC. Almost no one would use them without running through at least a volume pedal and then some other FX.adammann wrote:That's interesting. I think, like already mentioned, the M-tron is a must if you like a Mellotron like we all do and can't afford an old one as hardware
. Freeware-alternatives as VSTi were from tweakbench (has an own forum here), "tapeworm", and there was something from batsounds if I remember right, a very old vsti. I'd get M-Tron, but I have it 'til many years
.
Thanks for telling your setting, Aardvark, I thought a while ago how "close to the edge"-settings were done (there are even "Yes strings" in M-Tron). Sometimes it's really nice to know how others use the m-tron.

M-Tron is great.
If you use 'Reason', this one is excellent:
http://www.esoundz.com/details.php?ProductID=213
With a sampletank-player included, this:
http://www.esoundz.com/details.php?ProductID=230
and this, but it's more expensive:
http://www.esoundz.com/details.php?ProductID=220
Here are the samples from 'Hollow Sun' (a very useful collection:

Have fun!

I typically run the M-Tron through a sweepable filter and compressor. Delay and/or reverb (the Classic editions from Kjaerhus are great on the M-Tron) are optional depending on what you need. This give a great Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream) kind of sound. Works well on especially strings and flute (as in the track I did for the Chrysalid, the KVR Katrina Relief CD).Klemperer wrote:Sometimes it's really nice to know how others use the m-tron.

Here's J.P. Hovercrafts Mellotron samples:
http://tinpan.fortunecity.com/aphex/113/
They're as "mellotron-ish" as it gets. I mean, it's the real deal sampled.
I think on www.sf2midi.com you can find some soundfonts based on them.
For a freebie, they are excellent.
For anything payware I'd go for G-Media.

EVE 2 and the Mellotronix soundset (uses the Hollow Sun samples) are excellent.
