Thanks. I wouldn't know the difference . I drove a 306 and a 626, but never saw a software emulation of those .

You'd know the difference if you heard it. 808 has the kick that sounds more like a sub-bass. 909 has the signature punchy kick most frequently heard in the house/techno/trance sub-genres. But, it has to be the clap that *really* stands out on the 909. No other sound quite like it

Is Nexus good for drums?

I love my copy of RMIV, like you said the possibility to combine samples and synthesis is just great

Before I had RMIV, I used Waldorf Attack. It's still more capable as a drum synth, but I can't be arsed to load to VSTs for the drums.

...but if I was buying a combination solution now I'd go for Drumular:

Why?

- it really sounds GREAT
- very, very flexible
- has a small, clean GUI (it's like 1/4th of RMIV)
- coded by Andreas Ersson of iBlit fame
- 39 USD

Now when I think about it I might just as well buy it for myself as a birthday present, anyway will download the demo again.

my favourite vst is battery2 for all round flexibility, grizzly deserves a mention for the excellent built in effects and modulation and drumatic 3 is hard to beat for electronic drums (the best part is the last 2 are free)

since i got my machinedrum though i'm not really using drum vst's much

IMHO, this market has not been exploited...yet. Perhaps, this market has been projected as "sample-based". However, somebody has to makes the loops...I hope cats are smiling. There are a few; most are free; the freebies rival the ones that cost a few bucks; they aren't that expensive- except for Drumazon, which looks awesome, but clocks in at $149 Euros. However, it appears to be a bolder intro to this market...pushing it upwards a bit. Your thoughts?

I've got Battery 1, which I love...kinda miss the comps, though. However, I really love the tweakability of the RM IV, with the hybrid electronic/acoustic option(s)- it sets this product above the rest. The demo just wowed me...was kinda like the James Bond car that turns ito a submarine...Oh, it's a boat, as well?! It's quite obvious to me that Peter Linsener (Linplug) likes to challenge the creativity of the musician/artist. FYI: he recently added some very clever/intelligent mods to the O3 (formerly daOrgan), which will certainly give the organ more roles in the mix. If I weren't lookin' for an electrinoc set, the 12G samples that come with Battery 3, might be a deal-sealer. I'm not using Kontakt for drums, because specialisation has blinded me (i.e. let Battery do the drums, etc...)...tool overload can defintiely stifle creativity. Over time, I might learn them all...another tool in the bag, etc...

microtonic is awesome and well worth its very reasonable price. attack is great too, but i never warmed up to programming it and it didnt come with many presets. drumatic is also quite good. all three very much have their own tone/character. but of those three, microtonic is by far the one i reach for the most often.

and of course for something a bit different, i use one of my own creations, ironhead. ironhead isnt a general purpose drum synth though and its not built to do X0X type sounds. i like to think of it as synthetic junk percussion kit.

Interesting stuff. FYI: I'm suddenly turning to "other tasks", until I get my hands back. SO, the "drum trudgery", as I used to call might it, gets put on the forefront...see what comes out of this.

+1 for Ironhead. It definitely gives additional flavour to a track .
