Free Bit-Depth\Sample Rate Converter

This must have been addressed before, but I couldn't quite find what I was looking for.
Basically, I want to take some of the CM 24-bit samples and convert them to 16-bit, 44.1 mono so I can use them with some older software and so they take up less space. R8 brain (the free version) seems to require that you change the sample rate as well as the bit-depth, which I don't want to do. (Although I suppose I could go really retro and reduce them to 8-bit, 22.05.)
Any suggestions? It would be nice to have something that can process a whole directory. I suppose I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks for a good standalone application, but free would be nice.
Thanks.

Yes, I think you're right, but I don't think Audacity can do any kind of mass conversion -- can it? In other words, I'd have to do one sample at a time.

The new Audacity 1.3beta can batch process. I just tested it and it worked fine. Batch processed a bunch of files to 16 bit. No problemo.
Go to "Edit chains". Make a new one. Add commando ExportWav. Finished. Go to "Preferences". Set wav export quality to 16 bit. Go to "Apply chain" choose apply to files. Chosse the files you want to convert.
Done.

Easy, simple and free:
www.voxengo.com/product/r8brain
They also have a pro version that's not expensive.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. The Audacity beta version works just fine, even on my old Win-98 machine. I haven't used Audacity in a while -- it's much improved.
R8 Brain only has flat dithering (at least the free version). While I don't pretend to have a great understanding of the technical details of dithering, it seems like I get a lot of noise in the r8 conversion, and, as I said, it requires me to change the sample rate as well as the bit-depth. Maybe the pro version doesn't have these issues.
