My Grandma Minnie (yep, Hermione was a real name even before Harry Potter!) sent me her Magnus Electric Chord Organ several years ago, and although the thing was treated very badly by our friends at UPS, it is still playable! It's not really what you'd call a "go to" instrument, but it certainly does have it's own character. (did some brief research on the Magnus: the chord organs were popular in the late 50's and 60's ...and apparently Magnus's are not held in high regard "musically" , but if ya like this sound of this, you can get'em pretty easily on e-bay for really cheap...)

As a "first timer" project, I put together a very quick build of a Magnus Electric Chord Organ for Kontakt2.

This was recorded on a 1:1 (each note is a separate sample) so as to capture the actual "character" of the instrument.
this Kontakt2 instrument representation *is* a bit peculiar:
The Magnus Chord organ has buttons for these chords:
B-flat maj, B-Flat min, F maj, F min, C maj, C min, G maj, G min, D maj, D min, A maj and A min.
Since there is not a good way to map a 1:1 relation from the actual instrument to the Kontakt2 version, Here is an explanation of the key map used for this instrument:

Magnus chord>>> Kontakt2 note
B-flat maj>>> B-flat1
B-Flat min>>> B1
F maj>>> F2
F min>>> F#2
C maj>>> C2
C min>>> C#2
G maj>>> G2
G min>>> G#2
D maj>>> D2
D min>>> D#2
A maj>>> A2
A min>>> A#2

the individual notes of the organ are mapped 1:1 (C3 thru C6)

the individual notes are NOT looped and they vary in duration...and the looping on the chords is NOT consistent (...this is my first attempt at recreating a real instrument via recorded samples)
the instrument may be revised later, but it certainly captures it's character..and the fan noise inherent in generation of it's actual sound!
though it may not sound like it, the samples used are 24bit 48Khz recordings from an Edirol r-09.
Here is the link to Grandma Minnie's Magnus
here's what it sounds like in action...forgot to include this earlier

[edit] here are some later additions:
sf2 version I zipped it, but inside is a sfArk file.
Here is a link to the sfArk utility If you work with soundfonts, this is nice to have.
sfz version
fan noises from Grandma Minnie's Magnus 3 files: loud, soft, and "start up and shut down"
Hope you enjoy!

Hey, BLot,

What was that demo song? Was it done in a DAW or is it a demo song in the organ itself? I'd love to get the project or MIDI file to play around with... ;)

Thank you, though, for this really neat-o sample set!

Very cool, thanks!

@PaulG- the demo was a "oh shit! folks are gonna want to hear what this thing sounds like..." last minute thing: I loaded K2 and Guru in eXT, hit record and just grabbed the on the fly improv. No midi files on that one ...just off the cuff doodling ta give ya a taste of the patch. I did make the MP3 loopable to annoy the neighbors if that's what yer lookin to do :hihi:
Please feel free to fold, spindle and mutilate it as much as you'd like, but there are no midi files on this one

@meeks- you guys are quite welcome. As much as I've gained from the KVR community, I figured I'd give a little back...least I can do; it's the holidays and all :tu:

great gift !:)
thats the spirit ;)
thank you !

Haha, excellent. I have one of these in my room, but hardly play it because the keys need rather a lot of force to get 'un-stuck'. If i do play around with it i use the chord-keys though, they have a nice sound. I've wanted to play around with it through effects, and now that'll be a lot easier. Wasn't it difficult to capture the sound?
