Let's keep this thread as clean as possible.
Please post your links, possibly with a comment on what's to find, what is good, what is not so good.

I hope I'll manage to update this post more or less regularly, so all links will be in one place.
I may as well sort them by category, once there's enough links.

I'll start with this for now:

http://www.musictheory.net/index.html
Rather simple layout, nothing too advanced either, but a nice overview of what you may need to get started.

http://www.ravenspiral.com/ravenspiralguide.pdf
Quite a comprehensive guide for a lot of things, possibly too much for one document, plus, personally, I found some of the passages to be not so funny as their possible intention. Yet, quite some fine information in there.

Someone else *must* have some useful links, no?
I would post some more, but I still need to transfer my older office machine's bookmarks.

Ok, here's one in german, I found quite helpful:

Theory compact and entertaining. Also the articles about bass techniques are very good imho. Lots of additional cool stuff.

The uber resource - Dolmetsch. It looks a bit whack but scratch the surface and it's more comprehensive and more accurate than anything else out there...

ok here's the site that opened things up to me for 'extended' chords -- at least give a useful and common way to think about them on guitar or keyboard

http://chrisjuergensen.com.hosting.doma ... ords_2.htm

and a jazz theory site recommended to me

This might be obvious for some, but:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Music_theory
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:M ... erminology
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:M ... techniques

Lots of theoretical articles organised in subcategories. They may not be exhaustive treatments, but are IMO a good starting point for a beginner.
“Somebody said to me, ‘But the Beatles were antimaterialistic.’ That’s a huge myth. John and I literally used to sit down and say, ‘Now, let’s write a swimming pool.’ ”

Here's a weird one http://www.geocities.com/sd_au/clavethe ... heory1.htm

It's an Aussie dance site. It's also the best article I've read on what is arguably the most influential rhythm in modern music - The Clave

Perhaps the above useful post could be moved to a new thread 'Glossary' or similar?

Post

Hm, let's see. At first I will copy all links to the first post (with credits of course) and probably sort them.
But yeah, a glossary, probably extended by the knowledge of some KVR folks would be nice.

Don't worry about the credits. Keep it clean and simple. Our egos will get over it.

BTW one nice thing about MusicTheory.net that no one seems to catch is the ear trainer, which is really quite good.

Also I have their Chord Calculator and Matrix generator .swfs as my background for FLS, it's great having tools like that on-hand.

I've found this site useful in that it covers a wide range of topics, from jazz improvisation, modes, composing, arranging, orchestration as well as writing film scores. http://www.petethomas.co.uk/composition.html
This one speaks for itself http://www.jazztrumpetsolos.com/[/url. ... ellis.com/ Especially useful for jazz standards.

Great idea, 2007 will be Year of the Music for me and I plan to learn theory by myself, for free- nice links.

teoría- Music Theory Web: http://teoria.com/ exercises, articles and reference in clear flash lessons from José Rodríguez Alvira.

"Music Theory for Songwriters" by Steve Mugglin http://www.chordmaps.com/ perhaps not better than the other basic theory sites?

and something different: Harmony Central Composition Thread by Jeez
