I did something similar a few years back: I borrowed a D4 drum module from a friend and gaffer taped two triggers to a large gideon bible which I then played like a pair of bongoes.

Should be pretty easy to set up with VSTs: use any old mics (you can pick up little transducers from Maplins for pennies) and route them to drum replacement plugs...
