Sometimes (rarely) the hearing in one of my ears will just disappear suddenly and nearly completely.. then magically it will come back moments later.. unsure if its related.. but yeah its not good!

I had the same thing happen Hovmod and it went away after a while but it definitly scared me too. I since have been advised to ask the steward for a small cup of hot water and a slice of lemon. You put the lemon in the hot water and hold your ear to the cup, allowing the vapor to go into your ear. My dad claimed that it has worked for him in the past (he used to fly a lot too). Unfortunately I learned about it after my hearing was normal again so I don't know how well it works or how quickly or anything. It might be worth a try though.Hovmod wrote:When this thread was fresh I was just feeling sorry for you guys, and felt lucky that I've avoided stuff like this despite all the all-nighters in studios or way too loud concerts or rehearsing a meter from the crash cymbal...
Then, the previous saturday, as I flew home from Poland, it struck. I was getting this bad flu I've been struggling with for a couple of weeks now, and my head simply couldn't equalise the pressure as the pressure cabin did its thing. I woke up in Warszawa with both ears just blown up like balloons (it felt like that anyway), and the thought of two more flights that day really frightened me. The pain in both ears was really bad, and I couldn't hear much more than myself swallowing and coughing. The following two flights were nothing but pain.
For almost two weeks now I've been waiting for this situation to settle down, and I have to say I'm pretty worried. There's a constant high pitched noise in my left ear. It's got a very high main frequency, probably 10k or more, with a noise band down towards 2k I guess. It's so loud that I hear it when I speak, I hear it above music at regular listening levels, above conversations... I have to use my right ear for telephone calls.
And this has been fairly constant now for days. I've been waiting for it to calm down as my flu went away, and although I'm not totally done with that, my ear noise has been relatively unchanged for too many days now.
I wish I hadn't gotten on that flight.

A combination of aging and exposure to loud sounds over time makes Tinnitus almost an inevitability for most people. Not much can be done, so make the most of whatever hearing you have left and learn to live with it. More info at http://www.ata.org (http://www.ata.org)-

Loud music, supraaural headphones and flu are not that dangerous.
Beware of firecrackers and MP3 players with cheap earbuds - these can do some serious damage.

avoid headphones. Spend that money and get a real pair of monitors. Thats the best thing i can say. If you insist on using headphones, operate on low volume levels.

I've got one after a flu. It doesn't get louder from listening, actually it's mostly discomfortable when there's silence, when music is playing I forget about it. I had to replace closed headphones with open ones. On the bright side, I don't have to dither anymore.

Vurt meant you dug up a thread after it had been buried 13 years, not that he suffered from tinnitus for that long. Well, maybe...
You could have picked any thread written in the past year. There were quite a few, scary how simular even.
I have it well over 30 years now. You get used to it. If you're lucky. There are days (maybe even weeks) I don't really notice it.
For you it is really important to rest your ears as much as you can. In early stages and when the cause is not a weekly 4 hour dosis of amps blasting above 120dB, resting might help.
No volumes louder than your TV. No headphones! These are always louder than you think.

Tinnitus since about 25 years. The whole family has Tinnitus. I learned to live with it... i have eye floaters too. Trying to live with that as well. Oh well…
A relative would say that, if we would live in times where everyone would have to work hard to make a living, or stay alive, we wouldn't even notice all that shit. I tend to agree with that point of view. Not that it makes me feel much better about it... but, i really think it's a matter of attitude towards such things. Some people lack a arm, or are completely paralysed. Guess there are worse things in life.
