I'm running the latest version of Extreme Sample Converter and am having the following problems:

1. How do I create the loop start and end points? When I click on a sample (wav) and click on the loop button I get the two windows as shown in the manual. Clicking on the bottom window causes a "loop" button to be created at the beginning of the clip in the top window. Dragging this to the right I'm able to mark the end of the loop (I guess it's called loop-sustain in the manual). Clicking and dragging the line in the top window to the left creates a loop window over a section of the sample. But in the manual, it shows a "start" and a "end" button in the upper window. How do I access these?

2. What exactly is the difference between a loop start and end and loop-sustain start and end?

3. I realize you can't take a group of wave files and create a patch (say WS2). So how do you go about this? I'm know I can make a sfz and convert from that, but I'd rather not learn the intricacies of programming a sfz text file and converting from that. I'm guessing I could also load an existing WS2 patch I have and delete the files in it and add my own (haven't tried this yet), but that seems like a big hassle to and I don't even know if it would work properly, if at all. So what method do you use to create new patches from wav files in ESC?

Thanks! :)

I don't use ESC for creating editing loops, so I can't help you there. But as for building Wusik and Dash soundsets, what you need is ManyMapper by Manytone. This can tie into ESC in that you can open any Wusik soundset in ESC and edit the samples there after you've built the instrument from your wav files.

Also, sfz editing is not such a big deal, really. You can use the utility sfzed to create sfzs in a very simple interface. also, check out this about the format:

http://www.rgcaudio.com/sfzformat.htm

Furthermore, if you're sampling midi hardware, or VSTis, the sampling componant of ESC will let you output to the format of your choice, including Wusik.

Good hunting, and I hope you get your looping answers soon.

Thanks!

I'll check out the sfz stuff. I thought about buying ManyMapper, but after spending $50 on ESC, I want to try to use it to the fullest. I might still get ManyMapper at some point, but I think I'm going to see how sfz conversion works out first.

I certainly don't NEED to use ESC for looping as I have that ability in multiple progs, but after hearing some users here rave about it I thought I'd give it a go. I might just abandon ESC as a sample editor altogether unless someone comes by and opens my eyes. ;)

Thanks again for the reply Bbjg!

You need to place the cursor over the vertical line (below the 'loop' flag) - It should turn into a double-headed arrow - then drag to open up a loop section and do the fine adjustment in the lower windows.

I can do that, but where are my start and end markers?

When you open up the loop section in the upper window the selected part should be a light yellow colour. Drag on the left and right edges of the selection to do rough adjustments. The cursor changes to the double-headed arrow with an 'E' or an 'S' depending on which edge of the selection the mouse is over.

Right, and I get that, but in the manual it shows a green "start" button and a red "end" button. How do I access these?

Oh, right..you meant sample end and start. Good question - to which I don't know the answer unfortunately, sorry.

I just tried sampling a vsti in ESC, outputting to .wav files and the subsequent .wavs had the sample start and end markers in place. Maybe it's information added by ESC to the files?
Also show up with soundfonts...

I did and it's extremely hard to read and not really full of useful info...
For instance, it does not tell me how to enable the loop start and end markers, nor does it tell the difference between loop markers and loop-sustain markers. If I could get the start and end markers to show then I'm sure I could figure it out quickly by messing with it, but as it is, I only have a guess...

Perhaps kingtubby's experiment proves that wav files can not be edited in this manner.
