So why DO people get so emotional about music theory topics?

Chords, scales, harmony, melody, etc.

Perhaps people fear what they don't understand?

music is a drug, and makes your brain react in certain ways.

shamans used drugs to fool villagers that their were gods, and when the gods where angry they would make them feel bad(actually is was the drugs waring off)

theory tries to explain and categorize what people would prefer be mysterious and magic...when in fact it isn't

kinda like science explaining the bible(the noah ark flood,,,was just a meteorological thing...or that jesus didnèt excatly walk on water..there was just no word for swimming in acien hebrew that was + the translation of biased medieval king such an such not wanting to get their heads cut off)

Take a look at art forums, photography forums, writing forums, CG forums, filmmaking forums..etc. Creative people are all similar in that they get emotional about something they're passionate about. Hell, take a look at political/social discussion forums--I think it's even worse!

Theory is an emotional thing because some people feel intimidated, threatened, or validated by it, and it's something that not everyone has the brain power to learn, thus creating personal baggages and chips on shoulders between those who can and those who can't. It's a very similar discussion between artists that bothered to learn composition, color theory, anatomy, values, perspective, drawing/painting techniques, design philosophies..etc, and those that feel they don't need to know any of that and can just splatter paint onto the canvas or glue found objects together and feel just as entitled to be called an artist. Of course, we've all seen and heard the arguments for both sides, so I won't repeat them here.

I think you just did repeat some of the arguments for music theory: you say people who don't learn music theory are stupid and lazy and then people wonder why people who didnt learn (need?) music theory get emotional over this...

Because your music sucks and you're an asshole! (I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time expressing myself)
