Bad english language

Yesterday, I wanted download a free plug from a website, but the dev. wanted my mail adress to send me a link to the vst file.
First of able, I'd been irritated, then I've thought that this guy was right, 'coz, often, the dev. haven't feedbacks, no thank's.
IMO, ask a mail adress is a good way.

What is your opinion ?

I agree, developers of freeware have the 'right' to want to know who downloads or uses their stuff.. After all that's probably the most important motivation for creating it: Knowing that others use it.

On the other hand, they should also create some kind of privacy policy, stating that your info will never be shared or sold etc.

Worst case: Just create an additional hotmail address for this kind of things, so it won't bother you if it gets spammed.

I use a disposable e-mail for such situations.

Many are bothered by having to submit an email to grab a free plug but myself I don't mind either way. As stated disposable email accts are the way to go with this.

One of the big benefits of having to submit an email is that if the developer choses, they can keep the people who did download abreast of developments on that plug (so long as you don't do Wusik style and send many emails about any small thing that might be happening on any given day

)

Privacy policy (as previously stated) is a must though.

I don't DL a plugin where i have to give an e-mail address. There plenty of good free ones where you don't have to. I don't get irritated or anything and i do understand the motivation for it but for me it is a no no.

They'll figure out how many people dislike being offered something as "free" when it's actually not, believe me they'll understand soon enough, it's "the way of the web" imho, if something is offered as "free" and then requires something it's not free, free is free, not is not...

If they want someone to test there app then let them say so, otherwise I smell something rotten when I see this happen, he may have the best intentions in the world but being spammed leaves a rather bad taste in a users mouth for a long time imho...

One never knows what's going on behind the dev asking, sure you can guess but who has time for these games unless he's looking for a fool or something else or just poking for reaction, I have time for neither really...F2

I might be interested in the total number of downloads but I'm not sure that I would need to know who has downloaded my free stuff

I bet one of the major reasons for this is to limit downloads to those who will really use the plug, so as not to waste bandwidth. Also, to block downloads by badly behaved robots, which can be a huge problem if you are offering a lot of stuff for download and have some bandwidth limits to stick to.

i give them my wifes email address. i get what i want, and she takes all the spam (1194 unread messages in the junk mail folder, atm).

also, i usually will unload the dishwasher, but not reload it with the dirty plates.
