Big Drum sounds used in film scoring

Happy New Year, all!
I am in the process of working on a claymation score/underscore. I would like to find out what the big drum sounds are that are used for impact. An example would be something like a trailer for a movie like Apocolypto. They are usually ground shaking in the theater. They can't be tympanis because there is too much attack. Maybe they are taikos, but I am not that familiar with them. I suppose a snare could be layered with a big bass drum, but there is probably a specific drum that is used. If I can find out what actual drums are used, then I can start my search for those drum samples. If anyone can shed some light, I would be grateful.
Cheers!
Harry

Apart from the drums themselves I guess very careful Compressing/EQ and the reverb on them (both the huge early reflections and not bright but long tail) have to do with this particular effect. Various types of toms, snares, orchestral kicks and taikos might be used I think.

uhm,
time to learn what that ".1" means in a theater surround system, then put on your Sherlock Holmes hat and deduce what's being used for the 'theater drum sound'

Today's film composers use a lot of synthesizer sounds and h/w and s/w effects to shape and enhance their sounds even if it's an orchestral based work. For more on the subject ask Hans Zimmer and others, or grab your synths and effects and use them too. My english is weak and I'm lazy to tell it more concrete. Your music is your business.

Usually with a boost around 50-60 hz or so you can bring up that physical thud.
Yeah, Storm Drum is supposedly what everyone uses.

Some of the Gtown church samples might be a good place to start. What do you think about that?

meh i dont think the sub is the answer. it will add punch, yes, but if you're running the wrong sounds into the sub it still wont have that hollywood sound. i definitely think the taiko is the source for this area of percussion but there's a lot of ethnic drums that have that sound too.deaf dunderkwac wrote:uhm,

i've heard the name stormdrum thrown out often but this is an earlier sample library to feature that style of film percussion:

it's $380 off the original price too
oh and yeah there's a lot of cheesy sounds in here too cause simply cause it's an older library.

Stormdrum, Percussive Adventures, Percussive Adventures: 2, Quantum Leap RA (some of the ethnic drums there) - all good.

not a lot of drum sounds in it per se but a useful collection to have alongside a more drum focussed library

+1 for StormDrum+RMX, maybe check out some transient enhancement software too like: Transmodder, either way you'll probably have to make your own layered sounds and maybe slowly modulate a layer or two but the above will give you some good sources.
Be interesting if you come back with what you come up with!
