"John Cage's most famous musical composition is called 4'33".
It consists of the pianist going to the piano, and not hitting any keys for four minutes and thirty-three seconds. (He uses a stopwatch to time this.) In other words, the entire piece consists of silences -- silences of different lengths, they say."
... is straight up wrong.
"silences of different lengths, they say"...
... says who, exactly?

The second is a document of a performance, and the third is fair game. Not really sure what you're getting at though.

What I'm getting at is the idea that 4'33'' consists of precisely four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence (or, more accurately, of silent performance)... not an arbitrary length of silence.

When "4'33''" is performed, it is performed for 4'33''. The sources suggest this... and suggest that when performed for 2'12'', it is no longer actually "4'33''".

:D

See what you've done even here people? "My cock is bigger than yours" "no it isn't" "yes it is" "no it isn't" "yes it is because I say so" "no it isn't" etc. ad infintum. I'm thinking of blocking this whole forum.

Ok, you've got me there.

True, 4'33" is a bit snappier than 'The Unnamed Silent Cage Piece". Nevertheless, I feel justified saying the entire genre of field recording sprang out of "The Unnamed Silent Cage Piece". :P

Fair.

Actually, length matters in other ways, too. There was 0'00''... another thing entirely, and not really music (but also by Cage).

And Kingston, why is it that whenever two people disagree about anything on KvR all the silent moderates come running with a hypothetical bucket of water? There was no nastiness here, no inappropriate or hostile behaviour... both sides presented reasoned evidence and arguments, but heaven forbid the conversation should be anything other than kumbaya and there's the invariable charge that it's all just dick waving and flame warring.

Come on now.

What was the topic again? please remind me? I'm most definitely on topic here.

There was never a topic, unless you count Amberience's crying face and the witty and altogether unexplained wordplay which titled it.

The discussion is just a series of tangents, really... anyway, what does that have to do with "come on now" (or is there some US/UK turn-of-phrase thing I missed)?

This is confusing to me.

I will admit that this forum is so far a bit less....scientific than I might like.

But do you actually think that the "My cock is bigger than yours" mentality is more prevalent in this forum than elsewhere in the music world?

To me that sort of thing is much, MUCH more prevalent in the 'My hosts digital summing is the best' threads and the like.

What is gearslutz other than that sort of thing?

of course you wouldn't get it, being at the very heart of it in several threads at once.

now you're just not trying anymore, but arguing just for the sake of it. then again, that's something I've come to expect from you the past few weeks.

Whatever happened to djdorian? he would absolutely love this place.

I love to argue for the sake of it, but I really and sincerely don't know what you're talking about. You quoted a line of mine and then asked me what the 'topic' was... I assumed that there was a connection, but couldn't find one. So I asked for an explanation. And you turned around and just said "of course you wouldn't get it".

I'm not being the bellicose one here.

aww, but you were contributing so much!

:hihi:

I'm just playing with you. seriously, though, are you suggesting that NO useful information was able to surface from this thread? it may have been meandering and aimless but it still did envoke (however briefly) an interesting discussion of experimental and avant-garde music...
