Well, I'm not sure what happened yet, but here's the deal.

I moved Sample Torrents to a new web host. I did this because I could not afford to pay for the old host, which was costing way too much money.

The new host had better equipment, full time phone support, faster connections, and just about everything was better, even reviews across the web.

Sample Torrents, as well as my personal music site and others, went down yesterday. I called support and they said that they were installing new RAM and upgrading the server, and that my sites would return shortly. I told them I would wait.

So I wake up today, and go to my sites, and it tells me that my account has been suspended. So I check my email and sure enough, there is a reason. Before I read the email, I called tech support again. They informed me that I had to respond to the email.

Basically, for some unknown reason, I have used over my share of RAM and CPU for my server. Keep in mind that ST only gets a couple hundred people a day. This has apparently drowned the server and caused a suspension. My other sites are nothing when it comes to traffic right now.

My old servers(the ones I couldn't afford) were nowhere near as good(apparently), and I never once had an account stoppage. I even used them for the uploading and downloading of the Katrina Relief CD tracks, and still nothing happened. That was multiple GB's in a few hours. Still nothing. This host supposedly has better equipment, and has came through great reviews all over the web, and I tested their support before buying. Top notch.

They wouldn't actually tell me that it was ST that caused the problem. I'm only assuming. But it's the only site that is used since I have changed hosts.

So here it is. Sample Torrents is down, and I don't know if it will ever come back up. I hope you all can understand. If it doesn't come back up, then thank you to all who contributed. This site was supposed to be a way of giving back, but apparently I need a dedicated server for that. I will be continuing my search for a web host while awaiting a response to my email to them. If I do find hosting that works, I may get it back up. But I cannot make any promises, as it's always possible that it brings another server down.

Sorry for the site being down, and I hope I'm able to work something out.

Another thing that is wierd is that the traffic two weeks ago was far greater then the traffic of this week for the site, yet it didn't have a problem then. Only now.

I'm confused.

Tell me the name of your crummy host, so I know not to use them.

I will PM the name to you, just in case it's a misunderstanding. I don't want to be unfair without giving them a real chance to respond.

That's fair of you, koolkeys. :tu:

I'm sorry to hear that. After all you've been doing...

Maybe they just closed it because it's torrent-based and they're worried about that. (I don't know how many legal torrents there are :s).

Yeah, a little!(concerning Hovmod's post)

By the way, for anyone curious, I have read and I completely have abided by all the terms and conditions. Torrent sites are not against the rules, nor is the content we have at ST. I read it clearly before signing up and again today.

Now, they didn't tell me it was due to that, but I did check just in case that was the reason. And Sample Torrents is completely legal torrents only. Every torrent up there has specific permission from the dev or creator to be there, and I have it all in writing inside email or on this forum. They couldn't get me on illegal activity even if they tried.

Still awaiting a response.

I've never heard of a web-host charging/monitoring RAM and CPU usage. That seems ridiculous to me. I thought it was purely a bandwidth, upload/download usage thing. How does one even meassure that?

Well, here is the response I got from them.

Hello.

Dear customer, your main site is small. It is true. This site cannot cause any problem.
But your sampletorrents.newprowebdesign.com subdomain is very large site. It has up to
400000 hits a day with non static content.
It is heavy load for a shared site.

The only way to unsuspend your site is to remove this subdomain.

This, to me, is bull. First of all, 400,000 hits is alot, even with the announce script going on. Second, my old host didn't have this problem and ST was much busier there then it has been the past few weeks.

The near future for ST is unclear. I am working far too much right now to help pay for my wife's school and to pay mine off. So I will have to do my hosting search as I have time. I just got done switching every one of my sites around to this new host, and it was a pain.

I'm open to suggestions. But there are no guarantees at this time.

Bluehost is great. One of my clients use it. But it doesn't allow as many sites as I have, and is missing a couple of other things I was needing. I do alot of testing with various elements. But I do know it's a fantastic host.

that does seem odd/anonnying. Hosts should have ample CPU/RAM resources for the websites they're hosting.

Even if you were using too much you'd think that if they were a good host they would have informed you about maintinance/account suspension? pfff

Hope you manage to keep the site going. :tu: Twould be a shame to let all that hard work into the site go because of bad hosting.

I have a feeling that it is like many webhosts, they are afraid of the legal ramifications of torrents.

I realise your site to 100% legal but they (the webhoster) probably don't know that. They probably wouldn't care. Most think torrent = illegal :( Sad really. They probably gave this too much ram excuse to cover up what really bothered them.

I hope the best for you koolkeys and hope to see Sample Torrents live once again.

Thanks for the kind words.

As for the legal part, it's entirely possible that they are covering up. I did explain to them everything so they didn't think I was covering up anything.

As for Dreamhost, I have my reasons for not going with them. I do know about them, but decided against them due to reviews from the right people and other issues I've seen. But thank you for the suggestions.

When I return home tonight, I will post what I am looking for in a host and maybe that will help. Still no guarantees though. It may take some time to get up and running again if I do indeed get there.
