I don't understand why people are so reluctant to just name names. If my old host was EarthLink and my new host was Verio, I would just say so. Your post tells us nothing at all, aside from you were happy with one expensive provider, and are unhappy with one less expensive provider, and we don't have any clue whatsoever which is which and who is who.koolkeys wrote:Well, I'm not sure what happened yet, but here's the deal.
News about Sample Torrents. I'm PISSED off. And I'm sorry

I don't see why I was hurting anything at all. I wanted to be fair to the company since I had not gotten a real answer from them yet. I didn't want to crush their name here if it was a midunderstanding.james0tucson wrote:I don't understand why people are so reluctant to just name names. I don't just go with any host out there. I do research, and I test their support. Unfortunately there is no way to demo their servers outside of just browsing their sites. I was happy with what I found from the info I had.
The new company actually had better reviews around the net, better equipment, and phone support, among other things. My old host didn't have most of that. But with addons it was getting expensive, like extra domains and databases and such. So I switched. Newer plans and hosts offer more of these things in many cases, and that's what I went for.
Anyways, the company that is giving me problems is Midphase.com. They also own other hosting sites, but they all use the same servers and support. They are a part of the Chicago BBB, own their own equipment, etc. Everything seemed to be good. I signed up under one of their other sites, ANhosting.com, which offered a better plan, but you still got Midphase everything.
Regardless, I'll be moving the site again if at all possible. I've requested a full backup of the site and a proper prorated refund.
I have also received many excellent PM's with offering help and suggestions, and I appreciate them.
As it stands now, it will be a couple of weeks until I can get back online. It's more then just ST that I have to transfer and redo the permissions and databases. Also, I have to make a decision on exactly where I'm going with the site. I'm open to suggestions on things to do, but lately there has been very little new content outside of the EastWest demo and the Nexus demo, which I couldn't get up before all this happened.
I guess if anyone has suggestions on bringing back ST better then ever, I'm open to it. I WANT to return it, and I want it to have even more to offer. So I'm very open to listening.

Well you will probably have more people refer to you as "a person with tact", than I ever will. People tell me you can attract more flies with honey than with vinegar, and I take it to heart, and just use raw sewage...koolkeys wrote:I don't see why I was hurting anything at all. ----I haven't really followed this story, or the Sample Torrents thing in general, but I was just wondering why, 1) torrent files would use much bandwidth since they are so tiny, and 2) why you can't just post them publicly like at mininova or somewhere, and let them pay whatever bandwidth gets used ? I'm not trolling here or trying to be a jerk, I'm just sorta suggesting a different way of doing things, and curious why you didn't just do that to begin with is all.

I just wanted to stay professional with them. But it appears irreversible at this point, so I gave the name.
At this point, I'm going to do a lot of thinking. I am willing to put in the time if people are willing to maybe pitch something in. I can't say what this is, as I don't know.
When ST is relaunched, I would like there to be something special there. If anyone has ideas, as I said before, please let me know.

Well, the torrent files themselves aren't the problem. If anything, it's the announce script. Basically, for your client to know the file sizes, how many seeders and leechers, and your ratio, it needs to "announce" itself with the server. It's just a very small command, not even as draining as someone visiting the site. It just accesses the database through the script.liars&ashes wrote:----I haven't really followed this story, or the Sample Torrents thing in general, but I was just wondering why, 1) torrent files would use much bandwidth since they are so tiny, and 2) why you can't just post them publicly like at mininova or somewhere, and let them pay whatever bandwidth gets used ? As for not going public, it's because I wanted to have a place for musicians to go that wasn't flooded with all the illegal stuff. I wanted to be a more specialized tracker, and not associated with the others. This actually came out of a long thread here at KVR discussing the sites like Hammersound and such that have went down or not been updated in a while.
The problem now lies in figuring out how to 1. Bring the site back and 2. Make it better then ever.
This means better, more frequent content, and a server that can affordable handle it. I'm not sure how either one is going to go right now. But I will be looking, and also be contacting my old host and seeing if they will offer me what I am needing. Who knows, it's worth a try!

By the way, each time the client "announces" it registers as a HIT on the server. Not a visitor, but a hit. When you visit a web page, every single thing that loads can register as a hit. Loading the page is one, loading each graphic is another hit, etc. So that is my only guess on getting that many hits, although that number is still outrageous.

Well, brainstorming has begun on how I'm going to do this. Please throw any ideas at me, even if they may seem stupid. I want ST to be better then ever, really. I have several ideas already compiled, and a couple of PM's with great ideas.
I may need some help also, so if anyone has anything they can offer, namely time, then I'm open to helpers. I will be contacting the current mods on this as well. Something must be done as I would hate to see this site fall.
The whole process will be at least a couple weeks before anything is finalized. I will throw ideas around the forums as well.

----Well, I guess if you have reasons for not using a more known public torrent site that's fair and all. Maybe a music magazine would want to help sponsor you ? Or perhaps get with another hobbyist type site that offers legal downloads via torrent, and wouldn't mind splitting things with you ? Anyways, good luck, free stuff is always cool, and probably more work than we'd like to believe.

I agree. This is the first thing that came to my mind. I think that they are just making excuses.maniacal wrote:I have a feeling that it is like many webhosts, they are afraid of the legal ramifications of torrents.
I realise your site to 100% legal but they (the webhoster) probably don't know that. They probably wouldn't care. Most think torrent = illegalSad really. They probably gave this too much ram excuse to cover up what really bothered them.
PS, if you really are getting 400,000 hits a day, you better start selling some goddamned ad space. You struck gold!
