Another aspect of some flavors of "Free" is that, if there's no "consideration", there's often also no legal responsibility to perform. In most of the civilized world if you pay for a service, even just a small amount, there's an implied contract involved, and a whole body of civil law kicks in to protect the interests of both parties. Many, many, many business deals are done on "One dollar and other valuable consideration" which would otherwise be done for free, because of this.Xnah wrote:You should have asked moneykoolkeys wrote:It's odd that you mention ads. In an attempt to get the advertising ball rolling, I have offered free advertising to five different developers. Do you know how many have actually sent me banners? None. I'm talking FREE, no strings attached advertising, just as a service to help the developer, and we have almost 4,000 members.
Brent. and then offer them a 50% discount, and they would all be happy to participate... 'Free' sounds too much like a value of nothing (instead of a price of nothing).
If you say you're going to do "free" advertising for me, that could be construed as me granting you license to use my trademarks, for example, as opposed to me contracting you to do something specific with those trademarks. And, believe it or not, if you charge "$1" it's a world of difference from if you did it "for free."
