This thread seems to be yet one more brilliant, incandescent illumination of the old saw: one person's meat is another's poison.

Yeah, I know. I'm one of those guys that prefers FM8 to Massive!laputa_sync wrote:please use better analogies!
I have enough subtractive synths, thank you very much. Even if it's got wavetable oscillators. I never really cared much for wavetable synths anyway. I prefer Wavestation/Xphraze type wave-sequencing and vectoring, in that regard. Either way, I think that Surge and Komplexer have covered similar territory already. Massive is nice, with great mod routing that is somewhat similar to Surge and FabFilter synths, but hardly groundbreaking. FM7/8 however is a real classic, IMO. It compliments, and contrasts, all the subtractive VA synths that I have. I also really like the multi-point envelopes a lot. Something that Massive kinda has but in a lame and very limited manner.

Yeah, I kill puppies for a hobby too. Wanna make something of it!laputa_sync wrote:How dare you have that opinion!!!John Vulich wrote:Anything made with Synthedit.
Pick any 3.
It's just like playing an instrument made in Visual Basic or something. You're just always so damned aware of it being a clunky Synthedit creation, hidden under a cardboard interface that's been Scotch taped on top of it, in a desperate attempt to hide it's clunkiness.
I can never get used to using any of them. No matter how nice the cardboard is painted, and how carefully the Scotch tape is applied. They just yuck me out... big time.
Sorry.

Massive - same old, same old, and a cpu hog as well
Wusik - cheap does not equal good
Zebra - nice idea, so-so- gui, incredibly bland sound

I think Massive is the most overrated synth at the moment, by some way. Its a good (but not great sounding) synth thats over priced and sucks way too much CPU for what it does (especially coming from NI). This is the only synth I feel is very overrated, but I'll throw two more in to make up the numbers-
I think Vanguard is overrated, just not my type of thing.
I dont understand the love FM7 had whilst there were better sounding and more capable cheaper equivalents out there, IMO. I dont know about FM8, havent tested it yet.

Yes... Arturia ARP2600 and Moog Modular are so perfectly emulated, so good, so beatiful, has presets from synth gods... But they suck!! They are terribly, desperatly bad and boring!! Why?? I can't explain!! It's like some girls... So good that they are bad...beej wrote:I feel the same way exactly.pepelogu wrote:All the Arturia synths. I hear many like them, professionals use them, they must certainly be good in some way but *I* don't get it. They sound flat and boring in my opinion...

I agree about the Arturia 2600 and Moog Modular. Just uninspiring, and to cap it off the Modular has one of the shittiest UI's around.
I also find that absynth and zebra just dont click with me..i want to like them because they are very capable synths but i just dont like their sound, even when i've built something 'crazy' its just a bit boring. Its like that dude that loads of people like, BT, all sheen and polish, no balls.

You've gotta be kidding! Hahaha CS33? Adventus? Drumatic? What's wrong with them? It's a shame that synths like these drown in the pond of poor SE plugins, but that doesn't justify saying that ALL SE pluging suck!John Vulich wrote:It's just like playing an instrument made in Visual Basic or something. I could probably go on for hours. But my top 3:
Vanguard: I've never understood the overtures some have made over it. It isn't much of a character synth, yet it doesn't make up for its lack of character with deep synthesis opportunities (i.e. character in the way that ImpOSCar isn't a deep synth, but just drips with character). It's also a good example of developer bad form. When it first came out, people insisted it was aliasing, yet its developers argued there was no aliasing. A year later they say they've fixed the aliasing! And somehow, it sounded even duller when the fix was turned on.
Fabfilter Twin: I got this in the groupbuy, only because I wanted the filter and the delay, and the smallest package available came with the synth (actually, really only wanted the delay when it comes down to it, I think there are serious shortcomings with the filter). I've played with it several times now, each time I think it is that much less interesting than the previous time. I actually prefer their original monosynth over this.
Reaktor: I have near every modular synth environment (I think I'm only missing Max/MSP, Tassman, and Moog Modular). Reaktor is the most obtusely designed of the bunch. I simply don't get why people like it so. Every step in programming it could have been better streamlined, performance should be way lighter than it is, and the design of the shell itself (with that irritating floating control panel, which is irritating in that Adobe Photoshop irritating sort of way) is just filled up with clutter. I've heard good music made with Reaktor, and I can sort of see its appeal (especially since the library is so big) but I really think Reaktor is the biggest con in the softsynth market.

One of the things that made FM8 less than spectacular for me was that despite the overhauled, blinding white UI and new browser, the fundamental improvements I was hoping to see in FM7 were not implemented. I see very little reason to upgrade and FM7 is still a great synth after all of this time for that FM sound.
Regarding the OP, I would also have to grudgingly agree on Absynth. Despite owning it for some time now, it gets very little use. No matter how many patch banks I've gone through, they all tend to have this similar character to them that has proven difficult for me to work into my style of music. I usually just reach for something else instead. The UI hasn't really inspired me to dig any deeper either, which is unfortunate because I know it's extremely powerful. It would be amazing for sound design in film production.
As an NL2 owner, I'm with you on Discovery. It's a rather lackluster emulation, but they did manage to almost perfectly emulate the Clavia workflow.
Massive would have to be on my list. The user interface is quite good, it has a powerful modulation system, is feature rich, but in the end... the sound was fundamentally uninspiring and it was an enormous CPU hog. The oscillators and filters had a bland, clinical, characterless quality about them and surprisingly... lacked strength or "power". You can pile on all of the features, effects and unison modes you want, but when these core areas fail to inspire, it usually carries over into the rest of the instrument.
