Yeah, their early singles and The Modern Dance were fantastic.
I'm especially in love with the pre-Ubu Rocket from the Tombs stuff… production values suck, but the sheer energy really blows away a lot of the later versions of the songs…

@VS: i'm not familiar with Rocket From The Tombs...i've heard of Rocket From The Crypt, but sounds like a completely different animal....

100% different animal, although Rocket from the Crypt named themselves that to honor of Rocket from the Tombs.
It's the amazing band that Dave Thomas, Peter Laughner, Cheetah Chrome, Craig Bell, Johnny Madansky, and for a brief time, Stiv Bators, were all in back in 1974/75 before they split up into two groups. One group became Pere Ubu, and the other became The Dead Boys.

Pere Ubu's Final Solution, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, and Life Stinks, all were Rocket From The Tombs songs, and The Dead Boys' Sonic Reducer, Down in Flames, Ain't it Fun?, and I Need Lunch (a song about Lydia Lunch, no less) all started off as Rocket From The Tombs songs.

They never released a proper album, but in 2002, all their old stuff was collected on this cd, which if you have even a passing interest in Pere Ubu or The Dead Boys YOU MUST HAVE. It's that good.
A lot of this stuff just f**king smokes the later Pere Ubu and Dead Boys stuff, especially the original version of Life Stinks and it's wackjob organ freakout. Essential stuff, in my book, just don't expect great production values and I'm sure you'll love it and never hear some of Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys' stuff the same way again.

what are production values? the story rings a bell, but faintly....and it sounds more like high end hiss...no, that's always there actually, never mind...

Yeah it sounds a lot like it was recorded in a outhouse, but the sheer energy in it is so strong I couldn't care less.
You'll cream yourself when you hear the original version of 30 Seconds Over Tokyo. Peter really freaks out and I've never heard a guitar sound so goddamn nasty, filthy, and obnoxious.

i had some rough trade comp cassette with an early Ubu track on it i never heard (can't remember the name, lost it many years ago), and i was really impressed by the guitarist, just had a really good feel...i love that proto-punk shit, old hidden jems is where it's at....
