I am reading the manual (but haven't done much yet) which says that when a single sample .wav file is loaded it it automatically spans the sample across the keyboard.

Is there a way to bypass this and only have the sample load on the specific key you are intending without mapping across the keyboard?

Sorry if this isn't obvious,

No, there isn't, as ST has no actual user control over keyzone definitions at the instrument level, except to name your samples by note name to get them on the root key you want. The best thing to do for what you want is to create your instrument of that sample, then use the range control to limit it to the single key you want and save that as a Multi.

Another workaround to get keymaps as you want them in ST is to create your instrument as an sfz file, which lets you define keyrange, then convert that sfz file to Sampletank via Extreme Sample Converter or Translator.

I was trying to "think" myselft the best way to a drum layout of most of my wav samples.

Using this with drum maps on a DAW-host, I guess the easiest way would just to use the naming conventions to name each of the snare sample sets w/key/velo and just not to worry about those extra ones thrown in outside of the root note.

I was kind of hoping to use one instrument channel for snares, one for kicks/cymbals/toms/etc to try to use some of the effects within ST.

If worst comes to worst, I'll try yoru sfz solution. I did look at it after you replied to an earlier post, but not "enough to be dangerous" yet.

Thanks, again,

You can build up a drum kit combi using one instrument per layer by creating instruments with the root note you want, then using the range control for each layer to get the same effect of building a "normal" one sample per key keymap. You can set each layer to the same MIDI channel if you want to play back the kit in reatime from your keyboard, or leave it mutitimbral for layered sequencing. However, in my opinion, for those of us who are serious about using our own samples in ST, the sfz-ESC solution is best in the long run, until IK gives us proper keyzone editing.

I was trying this exact thing earlier this year with the Turkish instruments CD.. ST doesn't seem to support this kind of mapping, alas, I was told that I would have to do this using another sampling application like Halion or Kontakt and then bring into ST.

Yeah, WAV import could definitely use some improvement...
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!
