Don't know if this'll need a bump, but I've been listening to lots of stuff in 6/8, but I find programming it difficult. How does it all go together?

6/8 is an example of a compound time signature. It means 6 quavers in one bar. These are grouped in 2 groups of 3, so the strongest quavers are the 1st and 4th.endfindead wrote:Don't know if this'll need a bump, but I've been listening to lots of stuff in 6/8, but I find programming it difficult. Here is a simple diagram:

The top line shows how you group notes in 3/4.
The bottom line shows how you group notes in 6/8.

What exactly are you finding difficult?endfindead wrote:Don't know if this'll need a bump, but I've been listening to lots of stuff in 6/8, but I find programming it difficult. How does it all go together?
Does your host support odd time signatures?

I find that MIDI sequencing with a piano roll view can be confusing because, as has been mentioned before, the strong beats usually are the 1 and 4, while most sequencers will have graph lines on the 1,3 and 5. If you don't mind cheating, you could enter it in as 3/8 in which case you can count 1,2,3/1,2,3 instead of 1,2,3,4,5,6. Then you'll have graph lines on every beat.

Aha! that'll do it. Yeah, my host does support it, it's just that the stuff i'm coming up with sounds awkward, and my groove-enhancing methods have failed me.me109 wrote:I find that MIDI sequencing with a piano roll view can be confusing because, as has been mentioned before, the strong beats usually are the 1 and 4, while most sequencers will have graph lines on the 1,3 and 5.
