GS3 +/- GVI on new C2D DAW ?

hi

I have recently upgraded my primary DAW to a C2D system (E6600, Asus P5B Delux Wi-Fi, 2 GB ram, 2 x WD 320GB SATA-2, etc.)

I would ideally like to get rid of my 2nd "Giga" PC (P4 Northwood 2.4, 1GB ram) and run GigaStudio 3 alongside sequencers, VSTi's etc on same DAW.

I read all over the place of people having nightmares trying to run it all on the same DAW (not resources related but GS3 causing BSODs etc.).

Does anyone have GS3 + other DAW apps running successfully on single machine like this ?

How does it behave as Rewire slave ?

Would it be worth investing $75 in GVI and using this instead ?

If this was the case, would I have a need for GS3 anymore (sample editing, Gigapulse etc.) ?

thanks

I have both (GS3 and GVI). I only really got GS3 to qualify for the discounted upgrade to GVI... as soon as I got the latter, the former was taken off my PC. GVI, so far works great; GS3 on the same machine using Rewire was nowhere near as stable.

I'm sure you'll hear someone say they have no problem running GS3 on one machine. Good for them. But the consensus seems to be that it's typically dodgy running it Rewired - especially if you're doing a large amount of tracks. Farming it out to another PC (like you've done) seems to work fine for most folks.

If you want to put it all on one machine, then GVI is the way to go, and by having GS3 you qualify for a nice upgrade price. I'd recommend checking Tascam's site to see if there's a GVI demo/trial available... it's the only way to see how it'll perform on your system.

Good luck,
JD

Seems as if Martin Walker will be discussing this very issue in his review of GVI in the new SoS (out Thursday)...

I think I'm going to duplicate my "music" OS partition once it's set up ( as a "giga test" partition) and test GS3 with this new DAW / software...

I get gvi for $75 (as GS3 Orchestra owner), which seems like a nobrainer to me...

I subscribe to SOS - will definitely check out that article.

I had GS3 Ensemble and paid $125 for the upgrade, which seemed very reasonable to me. Your discount is even better! 8)

Of course, it ultimately comes down to how GVI plays on your system, so cheap or not, try the demo (if available).

Incidentally, GVI is quite good at releasing updates. They've already released three or four in about as many months.

Cheers,
JD
