KRK Rokits wrong frequency response?

I was just looking at the frequency response of the KRK Rockit Powered 8's which I own. They are 45Hz - 20kHz. I was seriously thinking of getting the subwoofer.
BUT, I did a test with them and generated a tone in adobe audition. I went as low as 29 Hz and I could easily hear the bass difference, even in pitch! What does this mean? Why did they say it can only respond as low as 45Hz? I was able to hear bass as low as 29 Hz. Even the KRK 10 subwoofer says it only goes as low as 36 Hz.

it probably starts it's rolloff at 45Hz... surely there's a response graphs somewhere you can look at. I have the S10 and love it, and it goes a lot lower than 36Hz.

If you look closer at the specs it'll say something like 45Hz-20 kHz +-3 dB. So it'll be 3Db down at 45 Hz and it'll have lower amplitude the lower you go in frequency but you can still hear it.

oh ok. So the advantage to getting the subwoofer would be that lower frequencies would be at a consistent amplitude?

if you set it up right, setting the crossover correctly etc.

What do you mean by crossover? Is that speaker placement?

the crossover frequency is the frequency above which the stereo speakers become more responsible for reproducing the program and below which the sub is more responsible for reproducing. I would do some research before you buy anything. Also there will be instructions for 'tuning' your system with the sub.

interesting. thanks. I use a Delta 1010 so would its' bass management take care of that? and would I have it output to 3 channels: left monitor, right monitor, sub?

Is there a way to boost the low end of the two monitors so that a sub woofer isn't needed?

That's called an equaliser. But it's not the right way to fix things. Room acoustics are maybe even more important than speakers, sub-woofers, etc.Adambomb337 wrote:Is there a way to boost the low end of the two monitors so that a sub woofer isn't needed?

So if I had my room acoustically tuned and then ran an equalizer through the monitor chain, then I wouldn't really need a subwoofer?
Do you know of some cheap ways to treat a room?
thanks for all your help!

The RP10s subwoofer is a better match with the smaller 5" / 6" monitors. You bought the 8" presumably because they go low. These speakers go a bit lower than the average hifi speaker (most start rolling off considerally below 60Hz)
Do you actually have complaints right now? Is there something missing in the current playback?
You must remember: a monitoring setup should sound average and uncoloured. It should NOT have emphasized bass. It's purpose is to let you hear how your tracks actually sound, not to simulate earthquakes. When your setup is bass-heavy, it will result in mixes that sound bass-weak on other systems. Please take that into consideration...

Yeah, I have the 8" and I was just wondering if I was missing something without the subwoofer.
I don't know if there's something missing in the playback. It doesn't sound like it. I just want them to be as flat as possible. I was just afraid that maybe I wasn't getting a flat bass response...
Would the RP10 emphasize the bass? cause I don't want that

I think you worry too much about your setup. Go make some ace music with it!Adambomb337 wrote:I don't know if there's something missing in the playback. It doesn't sound like it. I just want them to be as flat as possible. I was just afraid that maybe I wasn't getting a flat bass response...

Never, ever put an eq in your monitor chain. Acoustically tune the room, and unless you have a spectacularly tuned room, a sub is going to do more harm than good. You have monitors with excellent low end response, learn them before adding more to the puzzle.
