how do you make glitch in realtime?

i really wanna try making some more glitchy stuff than i usually do, but whenever i do it, it sounds lame... contrived, boring. the problem i have is that basically i like to play all the parts in realtime rather than get a couple loops and program/automate/manually slice stuff up for hours, but i know that for glitchy music, there's a lot of automation and what not. any ideas how i can perform/improvise this kind of music rather than having to automate it all? kind of tough to say what i mean, i guess...

well, no, i'm not looking for plugins as such (and i have dblue glitch already). more of... a way to sort of get into the glitch mindset from more of a performance angle...Hovmod wrote:dblue glitch?
and please, no one recommend jack dark's plugins. not that i don't like them, but i can see that coming...

Anything by Jack Dark (Novuzeit) would do wonders. I believe Jack's SynthEdit masterpieces are some of the most underrated tools in this forum. Jack's a genius, I recently bought some of his payware synths, and got recently the Iridesynth upgrade. Pure sonic dynamite. Try for a start any of his free Xmas gifts (2005's GlitchGirl (Neo) and 2006's Nuclear Cranium). If that's not enough (and you dare) have a glimpse to any of his former Darkware productions.
To me, Jack Dark -together with H.G. Fortune of course, but that's another league- is definitely one of the most talented independent synth and FX designers around.

id give up on music and become a psychic, youre good
circuit bent toys might perhaps be a good place to start?
doing glitch totally live(ie having no prprogrammed stuff in samplers and fx) you do run the risk of not getting usable audio at any given moment.
it really also depends what you mean by glitch?
for me the term glitch covers too wide a scope to give a definitive answer, if perhaps we can narrow down what youre trying to achieve i can come up with a clearer idea.
kaoss pads are a good idea also, and with the kp3 just being released you may pick up a 2 at a more than decent price.

i would have to disagree about underratedness, they are highly regarded amongst the people jack primarily designs for, and jack himself would admit that his target audience is a pretty small market.Mambo Zombie wrote:Anything by Jack Dark (Novuzeit) would do wonders. Use a lot of broken stuff. Get an old sampler and figure out ways for it to make noises that it wasn't supposed to. That's the premise basically behind circuit bending, too.
Not sure why you don't want to use effects though, since that's the best way to to capture a buffer of sound and cut off attack and decay, shorten the sound, lengthen the sound, etc.
Also, investigate granular synthesis, it's essentially a specialized form of sampling, designed to make sounds into hacked up tiny pieces.

indeed i currently have my live set down to crusherX(daddy of the granular world in my arsenal) but even then its a lot of prepared loops alongside the single cycles.shamann wrote:

Get energyXT or some other modular host and build your own glitch meta-instrument from plugins and sequences, complete with custom midi cc routing controlling several plugins at once.

sooo what are/were the more popular techniques of making glitch outside of software? rewind a decade.. how'd they make glitch/idm back then?
my guess is a sampler with an autoloop feature for starters.. but thats just a guess

For what you want Lucifer 2 is probably the ticket. Realtime "Playing". As Derik White said in his review on traxmusic.org, "What you really do is "jam" out with Lucifer. Different keys and key combinations do different things and there is no reason to think Jimi Hendrix would have not fallen in love with the plug. I had a simple 1 bar electric guitar feedback loop that I played with for over 30 minutes all the while it never sounded the same. In order to really use Lucifer you have to get your hands dirty with the midi keyboard."
Lucifer 2, Audio Damage's Replicant or Heizenbox will all mangle/glitch/ in real time.
Cheers
