Has Roland actually even bothered to pursue anybody that sampled these instruments without permission?
yes. but in the case I know of, samples of a certain Boss drum machine created by myself, the problem was not the sampling of the sounds, but using the name of the drum machine in the marketing.

What was the outcome?

pulled the samples from sale (got a very strongly worded letter from their lawyers). I will be 're-packaging' them without explicit reference to the Roland trademark.

Incorrect.

Only the cymbals, ride and hi hat sounds are samples. The rest is pure synthesis.

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

Fine, whatever. Probably the least pertinent part of my post, but that's the interweb for you.

Yes, so just go for it dusted william, and be creative in the marketing of the samples.

I might just do that.

Are the sample-based emulations of the sample-based machines samples of samples? Or do some people use the PCM data directly?

I want to sample straight from the outputs.

Why would you do that rather than go from the ROMs?

I'm pretty sure that there is a stronger case for that being illegal.

HI

'Spectrum' gave you a name at Roland - why don't you ask them, your prepared to put yourself on the legal line based on opinions!

I never understood these threads - I will sample anything and re-jig it, so it becomes mine - unless you wanna make money on the back of telling someone they are buying 'authentic' Roland samples.

It appears that you either get permission OR alter the sample content slightly and don't use the trade name.

Flipper.

Getting permission is part of my plan.

HI

Sorry if that sounded abrasive!

I am pretty sure lots of people don't get permission - but is it worth the risk?
