Okay so I'm thinking of getting me some outboard gear... and I wanna buy something GOOD and not look on the pricetag for once (well still look but don't let it be the first criteria)

so I want a dual channel thingy so that I can use it for mastering as well as tracking... it doesn't need to be a tube thingy but it needs to be HIGH quality.

three units I like so far:

the JoeMeek twinQ

the TL Audio 5052 Ivory II

and the MindPrint DTC

I was also thinking about a NotAllInOne solution

Universal Audio 2-610, 2-1176 & Apogee Rosetta 200 with FireWire option

Now here are some questions

would the NotAllInOne solution be THAT much BETTER (and please leave out the remarks that my music isn't worth that much money anyway :hihi:)???

which would you choose???

and why???

is there anything else I should look at???

cheers,
mully

Mully,

The quick answer (because I have no time at the present) is the DTC. It is worth it for the EQ section alone.

Its all good...but that EQ is definately a nice piece of work.

Do NOT buy a DTC!!!

Why not?

Hi Mully,

If you're looking for a "sure thing" type of investment...
I'd make the move up into the Universal Audio gear you listed.

The 2-610 into an 1176 is a very classic front end.
It doesn't get much better than that... at any price.

yeah I guess I'm going with the universal audio gear into the apogee converter... maybe I'll dropp the compressor for now to save money..

Nor the Ivory series, I used them and was very unimpressed, especially since we have 2 original C1's, the Ivory's pale in comparision.

Also, none of these units are of mastering quality IMHO. In that pricerange I'd look at the FMR RNP and RNC combo. While there's no eq, IMHO you really shouldn't be eqing on the way in anyway, but choosing the right mic to do the job, proper placement, etc. The only downside is the RNC is not dual mono, so you can't use the two channels on two difference sources at the same time with separate comps. Again however, unless you absolutely need the dynamic control (because the artist lacks it) compression on the way in generally get's avoided here. Once it's printed there's no undo.

The RNC is a very nice stereo compressor, and would do as good or better a job for samari mastering as anything you're looking at IMHO.
