It makes chord progressions for you, yes. And you can tweak them if you like.

Apart from the chords you can record (midi notes for) a melody and solo track.
Then it should be a complete track, not just karaoke backing tracks.

If I needed a tool just to come up with a quick chord progression for inspiration would BIaB better or the new Harmony Navigator?

Post

Anyone know when Harmony Navigator will be available on the Mac?

This program is what I've been looking for. I have a foundational knowledge of Music Theory and Composition. This will help me extend my 2 minute solos into full blown orchestra pieces. I'm glad I'm getting this free with an ebay purchase I just made. Well, it's the 2006 version, but it will due.

Does Biab have a function select 'suitable' chords in a progression like in HN or is it something you have to do yourself, ie know your music thoery.

Post

You have to know some fundamental theory, like when to apply major / minor, or when you want suspended / diminished. BiaB just plays what you order it to play, although in some (jazzy) styles BiaB will chose chords like Cm7-13 while you entered a simple Cm.

The melodist can create chord progressions for you as you wish or you can enter chords by yourself. You can re-arrange the chords if you don't like the results. Just re-roll until you get progression for your taste or change the chords in progression. What is HN?

You can have it create everything for you, but chances are this will need some tweaking. But you do definitely NOT need to know music theory in order to use BIAB. You may learn some, though. :)

No, I did not. I am trying to help out. What's *your* problem, pal.

There is a very friendly BIAB forum at the PG Music website. The forum participants will bend over backwards trying to help you out there. It's not nearly as confrontational as KVR forums can become.

www.pgmusic.com Click on the 'forums' tab, and ask away in the BIAB forum.

HN is Harmony Navigator. I don't know too much about the program personally beacuse I really didn't go through their tutorial extensively when downloaded the demo. Bascially, the program lets you try out different chord progressions on the fly using the circle of fifths. It also let you compose on the fly. Anyway here's the link so you see for yourself:
