Novation Automap Universal - Speculations

So I just ordered a Novation ReMOTE SL 61 earlier this week. After ordering, I found to my dismay that it doesn't quite work properly with Cubase 4 (changes to vstxml make automap templates not work so parameters assign at random). Then today I see the fantastic news about Automap Universal and all the possibilites this brings. I know one of the great things about this controller has been that rather than using the very limited stepping MIDI CC method (0-127), it interfaced using VST automation to offer far more intervals (also made it nicer to record automation). Now it seems they are bypassing the host completely and communicating with a wrapper that will talk to the ReMOTE SL direct and avoid these issues like they're having with Cubase 4. Even better, it now allows you to control effects just as easily as instruments.
So now for the speculation questions...
When do you think they will finally make it available to download?
How is this wrapper going to work and what are the chances that it breaks something?
Do you really think it will function as well as they say (or better than the old method at least)?
Are you as excited as I am about this? Honstly, this is the controller I have waited for since I started writing electronic music.

I am right with you, man.
I have had the REMOTE 49 for about a year now and was bummed when this whole automap came out and I didn't have the SL.
So you are sure that this will work with the classic remotes? I only asking because this was the first I have heard of any of this.

Oh, my bad. I forgot to put that in my first post, I bought the SL 61. I'm not sure, but I don't think Automap works with the classic ReMOTE series. At least everything I have seen refers only to the SL controllers.seamoss wrote:I am right with you, man.

Sorry man, but if I were you, I would eBay that thing and get yourself an SL. These are gearing up to be the best MIDI controllers ever.seamoss wrote:Audioflux1 wrote:Oh, my bad. Oh man, I finally got my SL 61 in last night and I am in heaven! This is the MIDI controller I have been waiting for. Yeah, the Automap still doesn't work quite right in Cubase 4 (just as I thought), but I can live with that for 3 weeks until Automap Universal comes out...seamoss wrote: yeah, I will probably do that here soon. I agree that AU is the best news in hw-controller market since Mackie Control came out.
MCU solved jumping faders, but the biggest problem until today is, the stupidly automapped plugin-parameters onto the control surfaces. AU will finally give us the opportunity, to give all our EQs, Comps, VSTi the same layout on the controller, which is absolutely necessary for productive work.

I have been pleasantly surprised how easy my Remote SL 61 is to program. Also it sets up very nicely in Live 6, Guitar Rig 2 for example, maps out beautifully without any template. I'm still getting my head around the 128 param limit in Live though. The SL can use NPRN/PRN formated params but haven't figured that out in Live yet. KORE can do it so...

considering a remote sl - whats wrong with it in cubase 4 - my main worry is how easy is it to automate parameters on fx on any given channel ?
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

In Cubase 4, Automap will not read the .vstxml settings file for any plugin, so the parameters get mapped across the controls at random. According to Novation, this is because Steinberg changed the format of vstxml for the switch from SX3 to 4. They would have just updated to use the new vstxml format, but knowing this Automap Universal was on the horizon, they decided there would be no point.ericj23 wrote:considering a remote sl - whats wrong with it in cubase 4 - my main worry is how easy is it to automate parameters on fx on any given channel ?
When they release Automap Universal on the 26th, you will then communicate between controller and plugins directly via a wrapper. This means your mappings will be saved to that plugin (probably a file in the same directory) and it will work the same in any host you could possibly use. It also means Automap will finally support effects plugins as well as instruments. I'm curious to know what this means as far as the control surface functionality (how it controls the Cubase mixer) with Cubase 4.
As far as how easy it is to automate parameters, the great thing about Automap has been that it controls plugin parameters directly via the VST interface rather than MIDI (the same interface hosts use to control plugins via automation). I would assume that Automap Universal will use the same control interface as that's how it gets the names for the parameters (MIDI CCs can't do this). Which means all you will have to do to record parameter automation is click the W (write) button on that plugin, tweak its parameters with the controls on the ReMOTE SL while your track plays, then go back, turn off write, and turn on read. Your automation will have been recorded to an automation lane that you can tweak with the tools in Cubase rather than a MIDI CC lane (which is much less flexible imho) in the MIDI part.
I'm also going to sing praises of Novation for all to hear if they get this right the first time, but my experience with wrappers has not been pleasant.

thanks for the info - gotta decide whether it is for me before it's out !Audioflux1 wrote:In Cubase 4, Automap will not read the .vstxml settings file for any plugin, so the parameters get mapped across the controls at random. Where exactly did you get this release date? I searched high and low on the web to find an actual release date, and found nothing.... AFAIK, their press release doesn't mention one, nor anything else I found on their website (or out in the world just googling it)....Audioflux1 wrote:When they release Automap Universal on the 26th...
Do tell! I'd love to confirm that as a solid date........
peace,

[EDIT/UPDATE] I discovered that Novation has edited/updated their "press release" article since I last viewed it... It does indeed mention a February 26th release date now, with an important added caveat:
"VST support on PC only on version 1.0 release"
Oh well, we still have Paris -- and our AUs -- which apparently are supported in v1.0...
Well, better than nothing!

Hello
What do you think about this?
'"VST support on PC only on version 1.0 release"' (from the novation website)
Did this mean that the ReMOTE SL V.2 Software dont have VST support when I use it with programms like SX on a PC?
Can I use Automap Universal with ReMOTE SL V.1 or only with 2.x?
kotto
